President Muhammadu Buhari has given the nod for the upgrade of the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport to an International Cargo Airport. The president has also directed that reconstruction works at the airport should commence immediately.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Sam Onwuemeodo, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Rochas Okorocha.
According to the statement, ahead of President Buhari’s approval for the upgrade, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation, Hajia Binta Adamu Bello had Thursday paid an inspection visit to the airport with Governor Okorocha conducting her round the facility.

Taking the permanent secretary round on inspection of the facilities at the airport, Governor Okorocha said the long-time dream of Imo people to see the airport upgraded to International Cargo Airport is about to be a dream come true, and thanked President Buhari for seeing the need to upgrade the airport and giving swift approval to that effect.

Okorocha added that his government would work closely with the Federal Ministry of Aviation to ensure conducive environment for timely and successful completion of the project.

You dont just give international airport to please people. How viable will it be in terms of returns?

Whats the essence of spending billions upgrading the airport and not have major international airlines operating there due to low patronage?




The south East governors should unite and work for straegic investment and not competition. We have an international airport in Enugu, Anambra should go for another strategic investment in the region, same goes to imo and abia and ebonyi.

Instead of working to ensure that the onenin Enugu is working at maximum patronage and capacity you want to compete and divide the customers. At the End of the day, Enugu will have less patronage and so will imo. Then none of them will succeed.

As long as a Government carries everybody along, there will be peace and unity. More gestures like this will earn him the trust of the Igbos.....And probably quell the agitation for Biafra
