Zain Nigeria laid off 300 of its staff today. They have been given their disengagement letters and also received their severance packages. Another batch may follow soon. My brother was affected. Strangely, he was happy about it. According to him, the pay-off was very ok for him and he is already scheduled to commence another job in August. I hope all the unfortunate people sacked today can tell the same story.

To get work dis days no easy at all. 300 qualified and experienced hands sacked in one fell swoop, na wah for dis economic meltdown o!!!!

Not so bad, as you get 3 months pay, plus a month for every year you served in the company, including airtime allowance for the next six months, and free medical till year end.
For a company that had no retrenchment benefits earlier, it's an improvement. Most banks just tell people to walk away.
Good thing your brother already has something lined up, I'd say.

I think the thing cut across most departments. I heard Finance was hit bad, with about 90 staff asked to take a walk.

300 that's Huge. and about 450 jobs to be outsourced!!

Managed services is the new phase in telecoms in Nigeria. More companies will follow suit , I guess.
