The truth is, you know that many people are earning a reasonable income from the internet and being human, it's only natural that you want a piece of the action.

Before I go further, let me assure all my readers that it is possible to earn a decent income through Internet marketing. But, let me warn you that for a steady income, you need to work.

Money will not come in by itself. Work you must, not harder but smarter.

For a newbie, as all beginners are called by the gurus, if you don't have a good mentor who is more interested in your success and less on your money, you will have a tough time learning the ropes. You will be bombarded with tons of information, some simple and relevant, others vague and mostly irrelevant to your requirements. In your desperation to make money, you will fall for well written sales pitches which promise to help you make money and screen views of five and six figure income statements.

You would have also come across vendors who fail to honour their "rock solid guaranteed refund offer" in spite of repeated reminders. You would have immediately warned your friends about them.

The net result will be that you will end up spending a lot of money buying a lot of courses and programs which looked awesome on the sales letter but not at all workable at your present level of internet marketing or technical knowledge.

This is the stage when you get confused, angry and frustrated. Nothing seems to work. You have made absolutely no progress. You are nowhere closer to where you were in respect of your ultimate objective, which is to make money on the internet.

What has happened so far is that you have decided to make money on the internet. To do that, you needed to learn how to make money as others are doing. So you bought many programs and courses which did not help much. At this point, I would like to mention that not all courses are bad, only that you could not use them at that point in time when your overall knowledge was quite basic.

So in a nutshell, what you need is good focus on what you need to do to start, so that you will be able to proceed according to a plan and not just grope in the dark spending time and money and not reaching anywhere.

To make money on the net, you need to take some important initial steps and you will find them below.

• Decide and stand firm on your goal to make money on the net and continue doing what is necessary to achieve that goal. You must be willing to spend time and effort to learn.

• Fix a deadline (a date) by which you want your business to be up and work steadily towards that date in accordance with your plan.

• Stop buying expensive books and programs indiscriminately, hoping to find the magic formula for making money on the internet. A magic formula or shortcuts do not exist. What brings success is knowledge and a workable plan.

• If you decide to buy, an address or telephone number is a good sign they are genuine. Check them out first. Send them an email before you sign up to see whether you get a satisfactory reply. Avoid the 'Get-Rich-Overnight' schemes. They don't work!

• Understand that a single or multi-page website will help you to make money on the net. So you will need to put up a website shortly. This seemingly is the biggest hurdle faced by all newbies. Don't worry about this as there are good WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) programs with which anyone having basic computer knowledge can build any number of websites.

• Build your website for your visitors' benefit and not just to attract search engines.

• Be optimistic always. Never give up if you encounter temporary setbacks. Remember that it is patience, commitment and perseverance that brings success.

• Set aside an hour or more daily to work on your goal. Organize your work. Write down important information or take a copy for future reference. Do not waste this time reading all the sales pitches that land in your inbox. Delete such emails or remove yourself from those subscriptions till you get past the newbie stage.

• Concentrate on and complete one aspect of your work before proceeding to the next. If you try to work on several at the same time, you will not be able to complete any.
