Episode 3: Eke

A villager sighted him doing this and shouted while running to report to the king. The king summoned Vincent to the palace and asked him why he dared killed a sacred animal in their village. Vincent who was now very scared at the way the people were taking the issue said he was sorry if he committed an offence.

He was asked to buy a coffin, white cloth, and do a befitting burial for the Eke. He said that was very abnormal and said he would do no such thing and walked out on the elders. Ada Eke was very angry at Vincent, she cried for days because he killed her flesh and blood. Vincent wondered why she took it so personal and apologized just to make peace reign. But that wasn’t enough. He needed to make the sacrifice.

On the day of the burial which was seven days later. He went to the river of Umuato and digged the ground. He was surprised to see Ada Eke wearing a white cloth and holding an Eke round her neck. She was the one who would make sure the rights were duly conducted before he is set to be released and be a free man or he would be punished.

Vincent saw this as against his religion and his Christian life. First he never knew his lover was among the Eke deities, she has never mentioned it, now he is being asked to bury a useless dead python in front of so many people. He couldn’t do it and decided to walk out. Let them do what they want to do.

“I can’t believe this useless tradition of yours, what kind of nonsense is this, do I have to bury a lifeless animal, a dangerous creature for that matter” he said angrily. “Shut your mouth there” Ada Eke shunned him. “You don’t speak ill of a dead Eke. You have committed a serious sacrilege in the town, you either bury the Eke or you will have your family die one after the other” she said angrily.
