Niger Govt. completes repairs of water facilities



The Niger Water Board has said that it has completed repair of existing water pumping facilities across the state to ensure adequate water supply to the people.

The board’s General Manager, Alhaji Hassan Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Tuesday that Gov. Abubakar Bello was passionate about providing portable water for the people.

According to him, this is why we embarked on repairs and maintenance of our pumping machines, electrical motors, generators and electrical panels.

Muhammad said the job carried out on the facilities across 70 water works in the state lasted between September and October.

Muhammad explained that inadequate water supply in some cases in the state was caused by obsolete machines and dams and lack of water reticulation in some areas due to damaged water pipes.

``The last water treatment plant in the state was installed in 1995, while one of the oldest dams that supply water to Bosso treatment plant was established in 1949,’’ he said.

He said that government had invited some water supply companies to work with the water board to expand the facilities in the state.

The general manager said that government was preparing water supply investment plan which would attract and guide water investors in the state.

Muhammad also said that government was making arrangement to key into the National Urban Water Sector Reform Project in order to attract foreign partners toward regenerating the water sector.

NAN reports that Bello had visited the water treatment facilities across the state to get first hand information since he took over from former Gov. Babangida Aliyu. (NAN)
