Benue Assembly Wants Apa State by georgecso(m): 8:21am On May 13, 2009
The Benue State House of Assembly wants Apa and two other states created out of the present Benue. The others are Benue and Katsina-Ala. The proposed states represent the three senatorial zones of Benue North-West, Benue North-East and Benue-South.
Apa comes from the Idoma speaking area of Benue South. The others are from Tivland. The demand for Apa State has generated a serious interest among those who believe in equity and justice, as no Idoma person has ever been governor of the present Benue State, despite their continued loyalty and support for every government in the state. The Idomas have a strong agricultural and mineral resource base e.g.; (Owukpa coal mine) and produces highly productive but largely humble people. They lost the state by the whiskers when new states were created by late General Sani who created Nasarawa out of North Central, same zone as Apa. Benue House Speaker, Terseer Tsumba who read the communiqué from last week’s summit on the review of the 1999 constitution yesterday in Makurdi said the document contained the official position of the state.

Opinion
With the spate each tribe is demanding for its own separate state, we might end up creating more than 200 states if the quest for the creation of tribal/ethnic based state is not put off.
