Residents of Ogunfunmi Street, Akobi Crescent Surulere, Lagos on Tuesday, dragged a school teacher, Benedict Ekpenyong, a teacher in Akintan Grammar School on Akintan Street, Surulere, to the police station for allegedly locking up a female pupil in his room and attempting to rape her.
It was learnt that neighbours saw Ekpenyong take the 14-year-old pupil, who was also a pupil of Akintan Grammar School and only as Blessing to his apartment at about 12pm and heard the bolt to the door lock.
Both of them were in the room for a few minutes before a mob surrounded the house and tried to force the teacher’s door open. Upon succefully forcing the door open, the mob observed that Ekpenyong had allegedly tried to have sex with the pupil, so they began to beat him.
The teacher was reportedly beaten by the mob before he and the pupil were dragged to the Alakara Police Division at about 1pm.
An eyewitness said that the neighbours had become angry because Ekpenyong allegedly had a habit of bringing schoolgirls and locking them up in his room during school hours.
He said:
“I do not stay on Ogunfunmi Street but I knew when the mob went to the house. For several minutes, people gathered in front of the teacher’s room and asked him to open the door but he refused. Then, they forced it open.
“When they did, they found evidence that Ekpenyong might have attempted to rape the girl as the pupil was not the first person that would be brought to the teacher’s room. So, they began to beat him up. It was a major scene on the street.”

According to reports by Punch Metro, Ekpenyong was arrested and detained by the police, while the teenager was taken away by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team of the Lagos State Government for medical examination and rehabilitation.
One of the social workers, identified only as Idowu, said:
“The information we have is that the suspect is notorious in the area for bringing little girls to his house and doing suspicious things with them. He locks them up in his room so nobody gets to hear anything.
“On Tuesday, the neighbours were watching him and they sent an alert to the government. By the time we got there, he had stepped out with the girl. The people actually beat him up and dragged both of them to the police station. The girl has been taken and we are making arrangements to move her from the station.”
The Coordinator, DSVRT, Lola Viviour-Adeniyi, said the team would write to the Ministry of Education to investigate the school as it had been reported that cases of sexual abuses were rampant in the school.
She added:
“As we speak, the girl is under protection. We want the police to ensure that the suspect is charged to court as the government is interested in the matter. Also, we will write to the Ministry of Education to investigate the school as we learnt that this was not the first time cases of sexual abuse would come up.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the teacher’s arrest and added that the police had visited the scene of the crime and would charge the suspect to court after investigation was concluded.

I think Rape is fast taking a new meaning. The last time I checked, there was a clear difference between child molestation and Rape. Even when it's obvious that there is evidence of consent, it's tagged 'rape'

They may be close in meaning but definitely different. Rape is a forceful or violent carnal knowledge...The above did not indicate any of such. He took her home, bolted the door and... He did not drag her home, force her into his room and struggled to bolt the door as a result of her resistance, No!

Molestation on the other hand, which is proper for what happened, is subjecting one to unwanted or improper sexual activity. This is mostly due to the vulnerability of the girl or woman in question. Most men take advantage of the vulnerability of their partner to molest them...A case visibly seen in schools, especially the higher institutions. In the secondary school, teachers take advantage of their pupil's immaturity and dependence to molest them...by caring for them and making the pupil subjected to them alone and giving the pupil the idea that she or he (as the case may be) will suffer if she/he leaves, making the pupil feel that wrong is right and it's normal to engage in such act, instilling fear into them...etc.

My take...
Parents
The onus of all the immorality goes back home. How many parents are worthy of that name? How many of them care about their children again? they are always busy...no time to give a proper orientation to their children again. They don't know who they move around with (no time), where they go (no time), what they do(no time), how they live(no time), etc.
Try listening to any of these children's discussions(especially those in secondary school) you will marvel at the level they have gone shocked

Society
The society is also not free from the blame. The books, films, magazines, social media are not helping matters. We live in a society where vice is humoured. No one cares what goes into circulation, who reads them or where it ends, as long as the 'pay' is good. I read an article recently on nairaland, where the OP, stated that 'Nigerians are obsessed with sex.' That is a clear fact that we are denying and thus, pretend all is well with our society.
We are quick to condemn it online or in our discussions but we keep opening avenues for it to thrive(this seen in the number of irelevant and morally derailed topics that make front page on nairaland)...We call it socialising or modernisation.

Government
Hmmmmm...
Where do I begin? How many of the offenders have been properly dealt with( I guess the government is always busy with 'more important issues'). How many child right have been successfully taking to a considerable end? How many government agencies are truly fighting the cause of the child? Are we to talk of the many women who have been molested and are constantly being molested in offices, prisons and even government settings?

May God help us.

I dont think its a case of rape, I think he is just a pedophile. He should be sentenced to the Northern part of the country where pedophilia is permissible under Sharia.
