List Of Incorrect Words/phrases Commonly Used In Nigeria by Oshovie(m): 4:08pm On Nov 16, 2015 |
1. Rainboots: there's nothing like "rainboots" in the dictionary. The correct word is "rubber boots" or "wellingtons". 2. Electric pole: though this is very popular and not totally incorrect, the appropriate word is "pylon". 3. Papa's cap: nothing like that in the dictionary. It is rather, "flat cap". 4. Slippers: the word "slippers" exists in the dictionary, however, its true meaning differs from the sense in which we use it. A slippers is a loose soft shoe that you wear in the house, according to Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary. The one we call slippers is actually, "flip-flops". 5. School bag: there's nothing like "school bag" in the dictionary. The correct word is "backpack" or "rucksack". 6. Jeep: yes, there's "jeep" in the dictionary but not the one we mean when we say jeep. A " jeep" is a small strong vehicle used, especially by the army, for driving through rough ground (according to the OALD). What we call "jeep" is not a jeep; rather it is a "four-wheel drive". 7. Sali: the part of the leg we call sali is correctly known as the "calf". 8. Rubber sandals: the correct word for "rubber sandals" is "jelly shoe" 8. "I slept at 9pm": you can't know when you sleep, you can only know when you went to bed. 2 Likes |

Silly post. What makes those ones acceptable and ours is not.Wellington for eg, is it an original English word or was it not adapted from the American version? Americans call trousers pants, what makes their's acceptable and not our trousers. Even some weird words are now acceptable in popular English,so leave us with our own adaptations, so long as we understand what they all mean. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Language is primarily any acceptable means of communication, owned by those who speak it. Some Nigerians always fail to understand this. 4 Likes |

Good one! However, I disagree with you on "school bag". Schoolbag (spelt as one word) is a compound noun just like schoolchild, schoolchildren, schoolboy etc. 1 Like

doctokwus: The post is not silly na. Haba! That's why we have formal and informal English. In colloquial conversations, you could use them. But formerly, it's inappropriate, semantically. |

American English is finished if we go by the dictionary, Bro. Is 'asap' in the dictionary But dat's how words get incorporated in dictionaries. only dat Nigerians are not yet authorities in English language. Let us do our thing. biko. |

oganology33: asap is in the dictionary. It's "as soon as possible". But you are correct about how words get incorporated into the English dictionary. We are getting there. For example, "juju" is in the dictionary. |

Change - there is nothing like change in Buhari led Nigeria. The proper term is retrogression. Which means to reverse back positive growth and development. |
