History of Nigeria Military Coups and Mutinies ever occurred in the Country both the successful ones and the Futile ones.
(1) The first coup that occurred in Nigeria was the January 15 1966 coup the mutiny were instigated by five majors Named Major Adewale Ademoyega, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna a cousin of Nnamdi azikiwe, Major Kaduna Nzeogu, Major Nwobosi and Major Obasi these dreaded and sinister fierce looking soldiers decimate and liquidated fine northern and western military officers including technocrats of western, midwestern and northern region but unfortunately no eastern technocrats or military officers were killed fine officers and technocrats killed were Ladoke Akintola, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the nigeria prime minister named Tafawa Balewa, the finance Minister Okotie Eboh, western military officers like Brigdadier General Ademulegun a fine Yoruba soldier and Col Sodeinde.
(2) The Second Coup was a reprisal Coup and mutiny instigated by Northern soldiers like Col Muritala Mohammed, Major Theophilus Danjuma, major Ibrahim Babagida and other northern Military officers the northern Military officers believed the coup was genocidal and an Igbo Coup it was in this coup that major general Aguiyi ironsi along side the military governor of western region named Col Adekunle Fajuyi at government house ibadan a tentative report surfaced that about 300 eastern officers were decimated in the coup and General Yakubu Gowon was named the military Head of State.
And it was the second coup that lead to the conflagration of 1967-1970.
(3) The 3rd coup was masterminded by Col Ibrahim taiwo and his cohorts were General Yakubu Gowon was deposed by his stooge General Muritala Mohammed when General Gowon was away for United nation summit in Kampala, Uganda.
(4) the 4th Coup was instigated by the dreaded Lt Colonel Buka Suka Dimka were General muritala mohammed was decimated along side his fine ADC from Ondo town named Lt Akinsehinwa Akintunde, his orderly and driver General olusegun obasanjo and general Theophilus Danjuma were also targeted but were not with Muritala in the car he was ambushed it was allegedly reported that Obasanjo was in a civilian friend house doing the christening of his baby along his office in ikoyi though the bloody coup was foiled and halted by forces loyal to General Yakubu Danjuma at radio house at Marina Lagos there was shoot out and tussle at radio house were Dimka carefully escaped but was later captured along with a prostitute in Abakaliki about 32 military officers were executed including civilians by firing Squad at kirikiri prison General Olusegun Obasanjo was later installed as head of state in 1979 obasanjo later handed over to a civilian president named shehu shagari.
(5) the fifth military coup was masterminded by Ibrahim Babagida who was a stooge to General Muhammad buahri the coup was bloodless and General Muhammad Buahri was installed as military head of state.
(6) The sixth military coup and mutiny was instigated by major general Mammal Vatsa an ally and bosom friend of Ibrahim Babagida there were reports claiming that if general Tunde idiagbon a vice to General buahri was around the coup would have been thwarted but he was in Saudi Arabia for hajj pilgrimage the coup saw General Ibrahim Babagida installed as head of state.
(7) The seventh coup was purportedly unleashed by General vatsa a close ally and confidante of General Ibrahim babagida General Vatsa was later killed and executed by firing squad including other military officers guilty of the mutiny despite pleas from noble laurate emeritus professor wole soyinka, prof chinua achebe their plea were not granted.
( the eigth coup was the most magnificent coup though was abortive due to the mediocrity of some officers the coup was the Gideon okar coup of 1990 were by there was a tussle at dodan barracks the ADC to Ibrahim babagida was killed the killing was the cause of the futile coup General babagida escaped in a 504 peugeot unhurt general Sanni Abacha was alone and other officers at the heat of the conflagration at dodan barracks facing the rebels in a ferocious battle after the coup was thwarted gideon okar and other officers guilty were executed by firing squad and abacha was promoted to a full 5 star general for his gallantry and valour. Folks asserted that if major gideon okar didn't seclude the northerners the coup would have been successful. IBB later annulled the June 12 1993 election and handed over to an interim president named Ernest shonekan.
(9) the nineth coup were instigated by general oladipo diya and General Sanni abacha that fateful day fierce and stern looking soldiers stormed aso rock in armored tanks and president Ernest shonekan was deposed by General Abacha.
(10) the tenth coup was masterminded by oladipo diya but the coup was averted by forces loyal to General Abacha when the coup was foiled General oladipo diya was seen in a footage begging General abacha to grant him clemency and pardon him that's why General Diya is still refered to cry cry general till today his plea was turned down and he was detained and incarcerated including General obasanjo and General Yaradua and those officers cupable of the coup late abacha died in a mysterious circumstance in office and was deposed by general abdulsalam abubakar obj, diya etc were extricated from prison almost at the point of their execution abiola and yaradua died in detention, in 1999 election was conducted and erstwhile military head of state won the election against his kinsman Olu Falae he subjugated the north and christian dominated area of the east so in history ten military Coup and mutiny were instigated both successful and futile ones.
