Army General, wife, daughter, driver die in auto crash

The Commandant of the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps (NAEME), Major General Mohammed Garba is dead. Garba died along with his wife, daughter and driver, Sgt. John Achayi when the vehicle in which he was travelling collided with another vehicle.

He was said to be returning from his home town in Bauchi where he had gone to bury his mother when the incident occurred along Jos - Keffi road Tuesday afternoon.

The corpses of the deceased which were said to have been burnt beyond recognition were buried same day at Saminaka in Lere local government of Kaduna state, according to Muslim rites.

A statement from the Army Headquarters signed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-General Chris Olukolade confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, the three Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) candidates who died during an endurance race last week were said to have died as a result of exhaustion.

Autopsy reports on the deceased which included a naval rating indicated that they were hale and hearty but that the race was rigorous.

The Registrar of NDA, Brig-General A. T. Jibril was said to have warned the candidates before the race started to “take the exercise easy and not to regard it as a do or die affair”.

It was however learnt that this year’s endurance race was the toughest because of the strict observance of the rules by the NDA selection board headed by Rear Admiral Umosen with President Umaru Yar’Adua younger brother, Lt Col Yar’Adua as secretary.
