Dunno. Probably just a pet name, you know like "LA with a G O S" - La (Los) gos (gidi).

Some people have called it Las Gidi[i]s[/i] (with an 's') because it's a city of gidi-gidi (which i think translates as 'hustling').

In one of our Languages "Gidi" means food, I think?

I think all these slangs about names of places originate from the touts at OLUWOLE in lagos island.
you need to be in there mindst and hear all sort of names they call because their converstaions are always coded.

as somebody noticed these ?

I think he coined that up. the way i see it, it has some sort of "hustlin" effect to it, dunno undecided

back then when i still dey warri, if we can call lagos na Las-Gidi we dey kall am, anybody wan travel kom lagos im go say, " Guy i wan Discharge enter Las-Gidi

i no kno were d word for kom sha, but na warri i for am and na there we dey spik am that year

but rite nw me self i dey Las-gidi

I think it could be the location of the seat of Govt. Lagos state secretariat is located at agidingbi in Ikeja may be that's where the name coin from.

For some reason I always thought it was French. I think I vaguely recall seeing it in 'France Afrique' Book 2 when I was in secondary school. I may be wrong though

it came from las vegas, gidi just rymed better.
its diaspora guys that coined it so the 'oluwole' orgin is not too farfetched

I can't even say naeto c popularized it. Gidi has been used for Lagos for quite a while.

i dont know the origin of the word, but its been around for a while, dat i know. i didnt even know Naeto-C sang anything close to it.

Las-Gidi, Lag, Eko, all na the same.

People just coin stuff out of ingenuity and when it sounds good enough to the next ear, it spreads by word of mouth, just like Yankee, Jand, JD, JJC, FFO, Aproko, Efiwe, Efiko, the list is endless.

i have even coined a few slangs myself and they became popular in my little society, i.e. hostel, home and place of work respectively

What trips me the most, is when people in various parts of Lagos State say they are going to Eko/Lagos. First time i heard it , i did a double-take, asking "so if you are going to Eko, where the heck are we?" That was before i knew Eko meant Eko-Idumota mega-market and its environs, where you can get any and everythin at the cheapest possible wholesale price.
