the effect of economic sanctions would both be mutual to both countries. In fact Russia stands to lose most because their economy depend on natural gas.

If the president had put that into consideration, they will remain a slave to Russia forever.. The fact is that Russia is in Syria not to fight ISIS but to keep assad in power and that's going against turkey's interest..

And I still maintain that those economic sanctions won't have much effect on turkey, they have passed their message and it is clear.. Turkey isn't a country to mess with.
The way you putin fans have been sounding on Nairaland, one would have expected that turkey would have been erased from the map of the world right now... Lol
. trust me bro....

In a televised speech, Mr Erdogan warned Russia it was "playing with fire to attack the Syrian opposition, who have international legitimacy, under the pretext of fighting against Daesh [another name for IS]". He accused Moscow of seeking to use the downing of the jet as an "excuse to make unacceptable accusations against us", and accused Russians of "mistreating" Turkish citizens who were in the country for a trade fair. Mr Erdogan said he hoped to meet Mr Putin face to face on the sidelines of the climate summit in Paris next week "to bring the issue to a reasonable point. We are disturbed that the issue has been escalated". While he has refused to apologise, Mr Erdogan did say on Thursday that had Turkey known the plane was Russian, "maybe we would have warned it differently". But Mr Putin has firmly rejected any suggestion Turkey did not recognise the plane as Russian. He said it was easily identifiable and its co-ordinates had been passed on to Turkey's ally, the US. President Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said the Kremlin had received Mr Erdogan's request for a meeting but he would not say whether such a meeting was possible. "We have seen that the Turkish side hasn't been ready to offer an elementary apology over the plane incident," he said. Announcing the suspension of a visa-free travel regime with Turkey from 1 January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he believed the Turkish leadership had "crossed the line of what is acceptable". Russia on Thursday said it was drafting a wide-ranging list of economic sanctions against Turkey that would hit food imports and joint investment projects among other things. Turkey and Russia have important economic links . Russia is Turkey's second-largest trading partner, while more than three million Russian tourists visited Turkey last year.

read my word again, I didn't say Russian economy wasn't dependent but pointed out the fact that oil and gas dominate Russian export accounting to more than 60% in which turkey is a major market and a transit route. Russia stand to lose if those sanctions cover it's gas sector

thank u @op... These putin asslickers really amazes me, the truth is Russia needs Turkey more than turkey need Russia because of the dwindling oil revenue. Russia decides to target soft economic sector like agriculture and clothing so as to save face while leaving the gas sector because they can't survive without the money coming from turkey. The only sector that turkey would be badly affected is their tourism sector.

It seems that the only tougher guy between the two is Erdogan

Exactly.. I thought I was the only one that noticed the weak economic sanctions.. Sanctions to save face when major sanctions should have been directed to the oil and gas industry...
If you follow the way some nairalanders worship putin one would have expected that by now Turkey would be on her knees

That's what these clueless people don't know... And Russia is already suffering from sanctions placed on them by US and UN... And now to save face they are placing a sanction on turkey, sanctions that will affect them even more than the Turkish

Putin is an empty chest beater.......Russia economic ties with Turkey is very insignificant compared to Turkey's economic ties with EU member nations , China,India n United States, the noise maker Putin was on CNN yesterday complaining bitterly that he felt betrayed by Turkey's action, that he considered Turkey as a very strong ally, Turkey President Erodogan was defiant and fearless on CNN yesterday saying Turkey would not apologize for her action, that Russia violated Turkey's right as a nation, we were even expecting by now that the war monger n empty chest beater Putin would have ordered numerous air strikes on Turkeys key defense facilities , like several of Pro Putin Zombies on Nairaland had boasted.
When Bush was in Power, Putin doesn't over step his boundaries, it is the weak Obama that is giving Putin confidence to do gra gra, if mistakenly Donald Trump becomes President, all those eye service Putin has been doing will evaporate like it was under George Bush...Donald Trump is a prospective US President that will be on self destruct, the guy has no chills..Now imagine a Donald Trump as President and John McCain as Vice President that combination will just send Putin the empty chest beater to self induced early retirement n withdrawal from world politics.

LOL.. So now it is a sensitive issue? When Obama resulted to economic sanctions on Russia for annexing Crimea, you guys tagged Putin as Lord and concluded he can't be touched... But now economic sanctions on the so called small turkey is the best thing after fried rice... Funny peeps..

We are watching... Let's see how this war in Syria will end.. Your putin better wins, or else his middle name will be mediocrity when world politics is mentioned

but I read that Russia also makes money from steel and oil and gas and pipeline right of way.
so he's Just bluffing
cos Putin also likes money and will feel it if turkey decides to buy oil from someplace else
