ISIS MIGHT BE FACING ITS MOST FORMIDABLE OPPONENT IN THE ONLINE COMMUNITY.

After the brutal Paris attack, a group of hackers known as Anonymous threatened to damage the Islamic State’s online presence and they recently made good this threat. Their first attempt was shutting down the twitter accounts of known Isis’ supporters. And they recently made a remarkable effort in undermining Isis’ online visibility.

On Thursday, Ghost Sec, an affiliate of Anonymous, hacked a website which promotes the activities of Isis. After gaining control of the site, they replaced Isis’ contents with Viagra ads. This is a mockery of the organization which frowns on flaunting sexual conduct in public (they kill people for committing adultery). Anonymous made sure Isis is really ridiculed by posting messages such as ‘Please gaze upon this lovely ad so we can upgrade our infrastructure to give you ISIS content you all so desperately crave’ and even sold Viagra on the site telling users they need the drug to ‘enhance your calm’.



Waging war against Isis is becoming a global effort and organizations are carrying out sanctions against them both offline and online. Telegram, an app that was used in the Paris’ attack, blocked a number of channels of users connected to the Islamic State. What is the implication of this for Isis?

As part of spreading terror, Isis uses the internet to promote fear and further its cause. They also carry out online recruitment (like every other organization in this electronic world, lol). So erasing them online will seriously limit the spread of their propaganda and cripple their activities.

But it is safe to say Isis won’t take this without fighting back. They are also going to take steps to secure their online activities. But will they be a match for Anonymous? Events will tell.
