The Crazy Interview Question "What Is 1+1?" by sisqonite: 8:50pm On Nov 28, 2015 |
Okay, this is my first time but I wanna share a confusing experience I was preparing for the labour market about a year ago, after graduation, and having no clue even what my CV should look like and all To cut the chase, I went online for possible interview questions and I stumbled on this 'guy's experience on an interview question that made me realise people think differently The person in question said he went for an interview and was asked only 1 question, off course after the normal introduce yourself speech. The question was: What is 1+1? He said, as to this simplicity, he was confused, as you know how all these logical questions you're not supposed to assume is as easy as it looks but he was famished at this level. To cut it short ,I was following the tread and found out saying '2' might have gotten this guy the job or maybe not. In a nutshell, he said nothing as he asked for the interviewer to explain and he did nothing but to repeat the question that 'What is 1+1? He couldn't answer this and didn't get a call back. Now am asking you guys how y'all will approach this question and what will be your response? Cc Admin davide470, uboma 12 Likes 5 Shares |

Boldness matters. Be confidence enough to say Mathematically its 2. 127 Likes 5 Shares |

This is really a logical one. If I were in his shoes I'd give two answers, thus: logically, in Mathematics, depending on the base system, 1+1 is two calculating in base 10. On the brighter side, I think 1 + 1 is 1. Every organization need to have employees working towards a common goal, which requires cooperations, innovations, shatring ideas e.t.c. In this context, team work cannot be over- or under-emphasized. Many sticks make a broom. Therefore, 1 + 1 is one! 666 Likes 83 Shares |

I don't see anything too intelligent in the question as some are trying to make it appear. You don't know one's debt of anything by asking the wrong questions. Answering one is not any way intelligent. If the interviewer expected two as answer or a response emphasizing the base or association then it's okay. Maybe to ascertain how you handle unexpected questions. If what he or she expects is not that then it's useless and irrational. There's nothing intelligent at this point. 48 Likes 3 Shares |

Lastanza:I don't really think there's anything to brainstorm. We should begin to point out stupid questions as we see them and not treat them like some esoteric knowledge only shown to a few who are initiated. It's simply the association. In Christian marriage, one plus one equates one, the same in any team where a common goal is pursued. In maths, the base matters. 35 Likes 1 Share |

Reyginus: 4YM you've killed it! Well, if you're applying for a consulting firm, then you find out 1+1 is not 2 or even 1 cos you have to walk them through your thinking process. Also, 1+1>2 according to synergy Like i said earlier, it's not as easy as it seems. Like my firm says, there're no silly questions :p 11 Likes |

Reyginus: Well, you never know what an interviewer wants from you. They all psycho analysing you. So you have to tailor your response but you can end up being wrong by making wrong assumptions and thinking you're giving them what they want while actually going farther from halfway. Imagine an interviewer that's going through a divorce process and you gave the marriage assumption? 13 Likes |

In my opinion any reasonable and convincing answer u give to an interviewer to such question would be acceptable. No sane interviewer will penalize u if u say 1+1 is 2 because he was xpectin u to use the 'team player approach' or vice versa. Which evr approach u use provided u gv him an intelligent xplanation on why u said what u said; truth be told 1+1 any where in the world is 2 so no body will penalize u becos u said so. Some of this questions (mostly the easy ones) are just to test ur smartness, besides when asked 1+1 during an interview don't act like u are surprised at the question just answer them the way u would answer any other question the interviewer may want to know whether u take things for granted. 36 Likes 4 Shares |

Reyginus: Now you're talking. Just want to hear others way of attack Mind you on this post, I saw a guy write about a 2 long pages (about 2 min speech) trying to tell how he'll ans this and I was amazed as to how such a simple thing could cause a ruse. 2 Likes |

sisqonite:That's why I'm telling you it's simply a play of relationships. Imagine an interviewer who knows nothing about mathematical bases and you tell him or her about that? You see, the point is not really what the interviewer think or feels but what it really is. If an interviewer feels or thinks otherwise it is usually because of our inadequate explanation or they are plainly dumb. I don't see how any explanation on the association can be wrong. If they are really smart you will with adequate knowledge influence what they think or feel. You don't make yourself a fool because a dumb person is interviewing you. And the company who employs an emotional and downtrodden person instead of a rational and logical person is not a company you should be working with. 13 Likes |

For me I'd say the answer is 11 because 1+1 will give u two 1 and that makes it 11. 1 Like |

ethene: But lemme assure you if you've applied for mckinsey before you'll know you have to ask for the base, else you'll not be given that information The firm structure it's interview in such a way that you have to ask the right question before you can be given further information ...and if you answer straightaway, you'll be given what you needed then you'd have failed the test 1 Like |

sisqonite:That's what some interviewers can make you do if you don't know your stuff. You asked me what one plus one is, I will simply reply by saying: In mathematics, where we work with base ten, it is usually two, but then 'one' is also a metonymy for a single person or entity and in cooperation's like the one you are interviewing me for what I do must tally with what we all do. That is, advancing the company. You can add any other thing. 4 Likes |

What is 1+1? 2. This is not rocket science if you ask me. I know recruiters might have funny questions with funnier answers only mind readers can get correctly but it still doesn't change the simple mathematical fact that 1+1=2 9 Likes |

Two things are involved 1.just to show your attitude or character towards the questions... was it funny or U take it seriously .that is gonna show your temperament there 2.the question goes thus. ..what's 1+1 ? U Should not say 2 The interviewer was trying to know if U can move the company forward or it's on your interest you came for ,as in if U were given two things What to produce with (1) and what to produce [capital. In economics] (1) will U produce the actual things or U do better... so in that case U do times two ×2 of what they expect of U... which is =1+1=2 ,2×2=4 U do more than what the company expect of U....U go further Thanks |
