Some of you are either too young or suffering from amnesia. I do not want to think that the original poster carefully chose the topic to neglect certain people. Please Nigerians do not cut yourself short.

Let me start with Chike Obi, the mathematician. To get to that level, you must have done some original work "invented". That the rest of the world does not recognize (or credit) your PhD is something different. It just means you were not useful to them.

Prof. Awojobi. This guy is known as the father of engineering with many original work including adaptation of the African car. I am surprised some of his students or their children are not here or ever heard of him.

Prof. Adeoye Lambo like the latest Japanese Nobel laureate combine Africa traditional medicine with modern medicine at Aro Hospital in Abeokuta. If those that came after him never built on it, it does not exclude him as the original modern medicine man. Indeed, we are still struggling to combine both up till today. Whose fault?

Prof. Kuti tried through Primary Health Care. His past ground work is credited for Lagos' leadership in dealing fatal blow on Ebola.

The original poster excluded Arts but what is science without Arts & Science. So many original thinkers like Fagunwa, a philosopher in his own right, Chinua Achebe world acclaimed novel and Wole Soyinka were deliberately shortchanged by OP. So were Prof Ajayi, Prof Ekeh and so many others.

BTW, Phillip Emeagali is another smart guy in his own right but he blew his own trumpet and people got turned off. Anyone familiar with the politics of obtaining PhD will understand his travail with his supervisor. But that did not take anything away from his brilliance. Unfortunately many Igbo opposed him. He made his contribution, if he was white, it could have been a different story.

You guys must dig more into you achievement history, you will find that it is spread all over Africa not to mention Nigeria. Is Nkrumah a scientist or just a Art philosopher?

I do not know how much education Da Rocha had but he built the first waterworks in Iju that was later taken over by the Government.

Yorubas are despicable, the more you reply that dude the more he feels important, they are so envious that they dont have anybody that comes close to Philip Emeagwali's invention that they resorted to cheap blackmail to discredit him. That God those that matters acknowledg his invention so they can die in their hate for all we care.

I never wanted to comment on this thread but I think u and d rest bigots shud get it into your head dat every comment dat doesn't go well wit an igbo-related issues is not from a Yorubaman, don't we have other tribes on Nairaland dat can come against any post?

U made mention of Ogbunigwe in ur early post, u cud av stopped there. I bet d hatred the igbos have against d Yorubas is traced to the civil war. The Yorubas did a lot of damages during d war. It's like d Yorubas were the ones dat fought the war. Even the commando (3MCMD) dat was at heart of the war, did most of d damages was led by several Yoruba soldiers: Brave soldiers like Akinrinnade, Ayo Ariyo, Adekunle 'the scorpion, Olusegun Obasanjo, Alabi-Isama (Delta-Yoruba) etc,
the fact that a Yorubaman also gave d idea on hw to win d war didn't help matters!

It's time dis generation move past wat happened during d war! Let's face up like Nigerians and leave all dis behind us. It won't take us anywhr!

Thank you. What you have posted here shows that the OP does not know much. In the first place Scientists don't invent. They do tremendous work researching and studying natural phenomena by which they make discoveries. Taking it further into invention is another thing entirely.

what then is research?..madd mann!!

Emeagwali's case is well-known. Bringing it up is like beating a dead horse. Pseudo-intellectual criminal. He won an obscure prize by default, and he blew it way out of proportion.

If not for Emeagwali, computers, smart phones and wireless networks would be slow globally. His invention made possible processor speeds up to Dual-core, Quad-core, Deca-core, octa-core, e.t.c even the potential to build faster computers or smart phones.

If you're enjoying a fast 8GB RAM on your computer or phone, it's all because of Philip Emegwali. Without his invention, nothing would've been as fast as is enjoyed today. IBM and all the computer companies already gave up on the possibility before he did.

If he was a white man he would've possibly won a nobel prize.

There is a drop of greatness in every Nigerian. This exclusive list mirrors the great endeavor of Nigerian scientists both living and dead who have left indelible marks in their respective fields both nationally and internationally. This list is not arranged in any particular order and data was sourced from credible and verified bodies both offline and online.

PHILIP EMEAGWALI

Philip Emeagwali who may well be the greatest scientist of all time is a Nigerian inventor and scientist. He has been living in the United States of America for many years. Philip Emeagwali is recognized worldwide and has been voted “Father of Super-computing,” he is ranked #1 in computing. And ranked FIRST by Google for “contribution to the development of the computer.”
The TIME magazine sees him as: The “Unsung Hero” Behind the Internet. We at amebo are proud of you sir.
Did you know Philip Emeagwali has a higher IQ than Albert Einstein? Okay, now you know.

BART NNAJI

A one time Presidential aspirant and Enugu state born Prof Bartholomew Nnaji, is an erstwhile Minister of Power of the Federal republic who holds a Doctorate in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States. As a researcher, he focused on: Computer Aided Design, Robotics and Computer Aided Engineering. Using the knowledge he gained from his research pursuits, he created the term Geometric reasoning, the idea that most things we operate has a geometric configuration. He is also credited as one of the innovators of the E-design concept. He is also the founder of the first indigenous owned power generating company in Nigeria and was also a former minister for Science and Technology in the country.

MOHAMMED BAH ABBA

Necessity as they say, is the mother of invention. Mohamed Bah Abba from a rural area of northern Nigeria developed the pot-in-pot refrigerator i,e, Pot-in-Pot Preservation Cooling System in the 1990s. Northern Nigeria is an impoverished region where people in rural communities eke out a living from subsistence farming. In rural northern Nigeria, there are no refrigerators. Most people don’t even have electricity. So perishable food must be eaten immediately, or it will go to waste. He received the Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2001 and used his $75,000 award to make the invention available throughout Nigeria.

COLONEL OVIEMO OVADJE

There are many Nigerians who have made the country proud, either by their personal achievements or their contributions to the development of the country. But, permit me to say that, there is this one with very intimidating credentials; one who has made his mark nationally and internationally. As a medical doctor and a soldier, he has effectively combined the two for the good of humanity in solving the problem of blood salvage from body cavities by pioneering and creating a design- the EATSET to replace and improve on the gauze filtration technique as practiced in developing countries. This great son of is from the Isoko extraction of Delta State. He was declared the Best African Scientist in 1995 before African Heads of States when he won the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Gold Medal for scientific work designed to save women who usually die from abnormal pregnancy (ECTOPIC GESTATION).

PROFESSOR GABRIEL OYIBO

There are always two sides to the coin” and so it is for the most controversial scientist on this list, Gabriel Oyibo, a Professor of Mathematics whose theory – “God Almighty Grand Unified Theorem (GAGUT)” has been heavily criticised by some scholars. Some see him as a madman others see him as a Genius but that notwithstanding this professor boasts of a very rich credential. Professor Gabriel Audu Oyibo obtained his Ph. D. in Aeronautics and Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Troy, New York where he worked for four (4) years on NASA/AFOSR sponsored research and made several contributions in aircraft design, aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, mathematics and taught several courses. Dr. Oyibo received Knighthood by His Royal Highness, Attah of the Igala Kingdom.

Thank you for taking time to read, corrections are welcomed. You can also name notable Nigerian scientists in The comment section below.

i will keep on saying it again and again EMEAGWALI IS A BIG SCAM, A SHAMELESS LIAR

2007-02-23: No. Philip Emeagwali was never a "father of the Internet" and made no significant contributions to the Internet's development. Philip Emeagwali did not invent the Internet.

Philip Emeagwali did work in supercomputing in the eighties, making improvements to the "Connection Machine" parallel supercomputer design. But supercomputing and the Internet are very different areas. And Emeagwali did not contribute to even one of the hundreds of Internet standards, or RFCs (Requests For Comments), that were created in the early decades of the Internet— an open process that anyone could participate in. His supercomputing research was completely unrelated to the Internet.

Unfortunately, Emeagwali has promoted himself as a "father of the Internet." This is based on Emeagwali's claim that "the Supercomputer is the father of the Internet," because both are networks of computers working together.

The biggest problem with this is that Emeagwali did his work in the late eighties, and the core standards for communication on the Internet already existed by then. Yes, further improvements to the Internet have certainly been made since then— but Emeagwali did not make them. His research simply wasn't relevant to the Internet's growth.

A secondary problem is that Emeagwali's contributions to supercomputing just weren't all that significant. He didn't invent the Connection Machine, and he didn't build the fastest supercomputer constructed in the year in which he won the Gordon Bell Prize— not even the fastest based on the Connection Machine. His machine was only the second fastest. Normally, the prize was given out both to the fastest overall supercomputer and to the most cost-effective. In that year, however, the fastest computer was built by a team at Mobil... and that computer was also the most cost-effective. The judges decided not to award both prizes to the same computer. So Emeagwali won for his second-place entry.

I won't mince words here: Emeagwali has no credibility as a "father of the Internet," and his ongoing public claims to that effect don't do him any credit. They only serve to damage the credibility of those groups and individuals who take his claims seriously.

For more information, see the Wikipedia entry on Emeagwali and the Emeagwali myths page.

For more information about the real inventors of the Internet, see the article who invented the Internet?
