To raise the odds of getting pregnant, sex has to happen during a small window of time near ovulation. Ovulation primary is defined the time an egg(s) is released from the ovaries. A lot of patients ask this question and this concept is also the reason why some women have delay in pregnancy after years of wedding. Though in treating delay in pregnancy so many signs and parameters must be taken into consideration but the knowledge of this is very important. This piece will make you understand what happens before, during and after ovulation making it easier to plan your pregnancy and contraception.

How do you know an egg has been released from the ovary? They may actually not be a perfect proof that you are ovulating but theses can only be decided from the basic body signs like changes in cervical mucus, cramps, tender breast and increase desire to have sex and especially when these signs are combined ; it makes it fully sure you are ovulating.

Know when you are most fertile. You must always watch for increase in cervical mucus. Immediately after your last menstruation, there is always an increase in oestrogen, meaning the ovary is prepared to release an egg, then mucus become to discharge from the vagina. The mucus is whitish, slippery and thicker, if wiped with a piece of tissue or with the finger.

The function of the mucus is to facilitate easy movement of the sperm as it approaches the egg and swims into the uterus.

After ovulation there is an increase in progesterone which then makes the mucus sparse and reduced as the sperm may not be able to swim conveniently into the uterus.

Chat your cycle. One other simple way to get your ovulation period is by keeping a calendar of your ovulation period. If your ovulation is regulars, the 14th day from your last menstrual period is always the usual time you are to ovulate but if it’s irregular, count the period and divide by 2 to give you the target day. This will give you the possible result.

Track your temperature. Most women’s basal temperature increases slightly – about half- a degree- after they ovulate. To use this method, take your temperature at the same time every morning, before you get out of bed. Chart the temperature on a graph that also shows the days you menstruate. After you have done this for few months, you’ll begin to spot a pattern that will help you predict when you will ovulate. Your temperature will go up 24-48 hours after you ovulate.

Use ovulation- predictor kit. Ovulation predictor kits are home tests that can be purchased in pharmacies without prescription. It helps to detect the level of leuternizing hormones in the urine. When there is increase in leuternizing hormone, it means one of the ovaries is about to release an egg.
