A "special clean-up operation" by Cameroon's security forces has led to more than 100 Boko Haram fighters being "neutralised", Defence Minister Joseph Beti Assomo has said in a statement broadcast on national radio, the AFP news agency reports.

The operation took place along the border with Nigeria from 26 to 28 November, he is quoted as saying.


The sweep enabled troops "to release almost 900 hostages, seize a large stock of arms and munitions as well as black-and-white Islamic State flags", the statement added, without providing details on the identities of those freed.

Boko Haram is based in Nigeria, but has been stepping up attacks in Cameroonian towns and villages.

There has been no independent confirmation of the minister's statement.
