LAGOS— THE Lagos State government has been urged to call the leadership of Agbado-Oke Odo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, to order over plans to demolish their shops at Ile-Epo market.
Speaking with journalists on behalf of the over 20,000 traders, President of the traders union, Alhaji Lawali Dangaladima, in company of their lawyer, Mr. Mahmood Atanda, said the proposed demolition could lead to a major crisis in the market.
While urging Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to use his good office to prevail on the executive secretary of the LCDA to stop the demolition, the traders added that the proposed demolition would be a subjudice since the matter is already in court.
Their lawyer disclosed that when the market was to be redeveloped in 2005, the traders, mostly Hausas made payment through the then President of the association, Alhaji Haruna Ismaila, to secure spaces in the market.
He said upon the completion and allocation of shops to subscribers, the traders approached their former president for the allocation. The shops were allocated to the traders by the local council.
They alleged that the former president diverted the shops for his personal use and gave some to his family and friends.
“Since then the former President has been creating misunderstanding between the Hausa traders and other tribes in the market each time the traders demanded for the shops allocated to them,” he said.
Contacted, Alhaji Haruna Ismaila denied the allegations, saying: “I have shops and stalls in the market, how can I connive with the council to demolish the market where I am getting my daily bread from?”

The funny thing is that, so an hausa can be president of a market dominated by the hausas but if it were to a market dominated by the igbos and the igbos want to head their market, all hell will let loose...

I now understand better what being a coward means

That ile-epo market thou. The market needs to be restructured, modernized. The fed road is even worrisome. Obj did the road during his tenure. But the road isn't perfect.
