Overtime, we are made to believe that Nigeria depends on Northern Nigeria for food production, but statistics say otherwise.

This is a report from Federal Ministry Of Agriculture

The federal government Thursday raised the alarm that the current Nigeria’s food import bill was exceptionally high with imports consuming about N1.3 trillion in foreign exchange yearly.

This, the government said, had continued to hurt farmers, displacing local production and creating unemployment.

This correlates with Thisday report of 2013 on food import as high as N1.3 Trillion.

According to Trading Economics reports on yearly imports of different countries, Nigeria ranks high in food and raw materials imports.

Importing vegetables into Nigeria is highly profitable even though not many people know that the big sized tomatoes, onions, pepper and others they see at supermarkets and other shops, especially in Abuja, are imported and of high breed production, the shop keeper of NAL vegetables at the central area of Abuja, Alhaji Nuhu Adamu, has said.

The commodity, which is being sold at $662.4 in the global market, was shipped to the country between 2010 and 2014. Data obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that in 2010, some 435,000 metric tons were ferried through the port.
Also in 2011, it was 440,000 metric tons; 2012 – 470,000 metric tons; 2013 – 500,000 metric tons and 2014 – 525,000 metric tons. As at 2014, Nigeria produced only 930,000 metric tons per annum, while the annual consumption of the commodity in the country is 1.5 million metric tons yearly.

your claim may be true, but logically defective.

That Nigeria spends over 1 thrillion to import food, does not imply, she does not depend heavily on Northern food produce.

What if North produce in whole multiples of what is imported ? will your claim be factual? Do you have statistics of food produce from North to compare?

That Nigeria spends so much on food imports doesn't negate the fact that the North indeed does account for the bulk of our agricultural produce. Put simply, the North's production is inadequate to meet local demand.

Your argument is like saying Nigeria doesn't truly produce as much crude as it claims on the basis of the amount she spends on imported refined crude due to our refineries inability to meet local demand.

Whenever pple said they the north produce the foods we eat today I laff. The fact is that they have the capacity to do, but as it stands now they don't and they reason everyone knows. What most pple don't know is that even the popular egusi we eat is imported, the north only serve as a point of distribution.

Basically, what it all means is that there's some serious money to be made from Agric. Translate that amount spent on imports into dollars and you begin to get a picture of the opportunity this presents to ambitious agro-preneurs. Agriculture is indeed a goldmine.

The North agriculture is overhyped and is highly dependent on petrodollars the Northern controlled FG has been spending on Irrigation programs, subsidized and even free Fertilizers, low interest and nterest free loans that they( Northern farmers) hardly pay back.

The North agriculture is unproductive and will die naturally the moment the North's access to petrodollars is cut. cool
