Victorious Nigeria Dream Team back Monday



Nigeria’s victorious team to this year’s U23 AFCON in Senegal are due to fly into the country on Monday morning, officials have announced.

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI clinched the 2015 U23 AFCON title Saturday night after they defeated Algeria 2-1 in the final.

The country as well as Algeria and South Africa will now represent Africa at next year’s Rio Olympics.

In the meantime, the team’s three foreign-based professionals – skipper Azubuike Okechukwu (Turkey), Junior Ajayi (Tunisia) and Taiwo Awoniyi (Germany) – already returned to their bases immediately Saturday’s final.

NFF splash $500,000 on U23 AFCON kings



It can authoritatively be revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) spent about $500,000 as allowances and bonuses for newly crowned U23 AFCON champions Nigeria.

Each player earned $12,000 with coach Samson Siasia pocketing double that amount.

“All what they were owed have been sorted now,” an official confirmed.

The payments were done in Dakar, Senegal, and they were paid in Naira.

On Saturday, Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-1 to become the winners of the second edition of the U23 AFCON.

The Dream Team, Algeria and South Africa will represent Africa at next year’s Rio Olympics.

Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia has assured that his side will continue to work towards a better outing at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
The Dream Team VI emerged champions of the 2015 African U23 Championship after defeating Algeria 2-1 at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, Dakar with Etebo Oghenekaro netting a brace.

According to the former Super Eagles forward, his boys did the needful despite facing a tough opponent in Les Fennecs.

“I’m very happy to have won this trophy, even if it was difficult, but the essential thing was done,” Siasia told Caf website.

“It was not easy for us taking into considerations the teams we met in the first and second round.

“Algeria is a good team and they showed that on the pitch, and playing well. My players also did well by scoring the goals we needed to win the match.

“Now we will continue to work, correct our mistakes and improve our game.”

Siasia led the country’s U23 team to a silver medal finish at the 2008 Olympics and is targeting to go a step further when the men’s football event of the Rio Olympics kicks off next year.

“I was coach of Nigeria during the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, when we reached the final, and in 2016 we will aim to do more than reaching the final by winning the trophy.”

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has named Nigeria’s Under-23 team skipper Azubuike Okechukwu as the player of the tournament at the recently concluded Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.

The Yeni Malatyaspor midfielder was adjudged the most valuable player by Caf’s Technical Study Group (TSG) after the tournament.

Okechukwu was immense for Nigeria controlling affairs from the midfield as Nigeria won their first Under-23 title beating Algeria 2-1 in the final.

The 18-year-old played in all but one of Nigeria’s matches missing the semifinal clash with hosts Senegal due to accumulated cards in the group stages.

Warri Wolves forward Oghenekaro Etebo emerged the top scorer of the competition with five goals while Algeria goalkeeper Abdelkadir Salhi was adjudged the best goalkeeper at the tournament.

South Africa were awarded the fair play gong while Nigeria emerged the top-scoring nation at the event with nine goals from five matches.
