Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world by 2050, standing behind just India and China, a United Nations study has projected.

Nigeria’s population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing most rapidly and is projected to surpass that of the United States by about 2050, at which point the African country would become the third largest in the world.

According to a new UN report, “World Population Prospects: The 2015 Revision”, the current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.

“Understanding the demographic changes that are likely to unfold over the coming years, as well as the challenges and opportunities that they present for achieving sustainable development, is key to the design and implementation of the new development
agenda,” Wu Hongbo, UN under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs, said.

Most of the projected increase in the world’s population can be attributed to a short list of high-fertility countries, mainly in Africa, or countries with already large populations.

During 2015-2050, half of the world’s population growth is expected to be concentrated in nine countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, United Republic of Tanzania, United States of America (USA), Indonesia and Uganda, listed according to the size of their contribution to the total growth.

China and India remain the two largest countries in the world, each with more than 1 billion people, representing 19 and 18 % of the world’s population, respectively. But by 2022, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China.

By 2050, six countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the USA.

During this period, the populations of 28 African countries are projected to more than double, and by 2100, ten African countries are projected to have increased by at least a factor of five: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Somalia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia.

No doubt. Because of looking for female child, my wife has turned me to be father of six boys. Nigerian mentality

The more populous Nigeria is, the more cabal we breed, more boko haram, more miscreants, more Olosho, more Pastor self-called, more scarcity of fuel, more unemployment, more famine.......

I need to know so that i can mobilize for the vision 2050.

Meanwhile some people will be forming holier than thou attitude criticising this projection as if increased population index is an impediment to the nation's prosperity.
After all China, India and the USA are all doing better.

I need more children abeggi grin grin

We should start practicing Population control measures now.

The Government should look into ways to reduce increase in birth rates.

This is 2015, and we are already 160-170 million people. By 2050, we might be rocketing to 400-500 million.

And by the way, which country over population help?

It is really pity that the region that has nothing to contribute to the growth of the country except violence and destruction keep flooding the country children that they can't care for.

Unless the government takes very proactive and immediate measures in curbing our already worrisome population, especially with our being a terribly underdeveloped, technologically backward and very limited resources, a huge tsunami awaits us in the coming decades as a nation. Of course I won't expect our leaders to be visionary and smart.

It will be suicidal to have such a massive population crowded into a Third World nation.

Every people should stop hiding behind their religious nonsense to procreate unnecessarily and foolishly. Wisdom is profitable to direct.

Shit!, can u imagine!, on top this our small land. I know this information would be useless to our leaders. Especially when all they know is to born like rabid dogs, gather their offspring to invite violence and carry out election rigging, then go on the pages of national newspaper and commend theirselves for a job well done.

Bunch of latrine sucking pigs!!

That struck out portion I disagree. That's profiling and somewhat racist.

Given, we need to put up some restrictive measures on our birth rate if we desire to re-enact the economic miracles of the likes of Malaysia and China. The resources we have at our disposal currently can hardly cater for the entire population, over stretching them to their limits be they financial or infrastructural.

It is our hope that as the masses become more and more educated and enlightened, birth control measures would be adopted on personal/individual basis without constitutional amendment/enforcement. That is why an aggressive investment in education is imperative to every country that seeks sociopolitical/religious/economic emancipation.

We will surely get there sooner than we think.
