The Onowu of Igbo Land, His highness Onowu, Hon Dr M.N Ozua Okoye
(JP), who is the traditional prime minster of Igbo Land and Igbo
Regent, as well as Onowu of Awkuzu has finally opened up on the cause
of Biafra by the Igbo’s, in an interview in his palace, where he stated
that Biafra will come into existence, but it would be at God’s own
time.
He stated ‘God would give us Biafra at his own time. Let Nigeria take
it slow. Look at those killed and arrested during the release Nnamdi
Kanu of radio Biafra riots’ my God told me Biafra would come, Arewa
would go its own way, Yoruba would also go, but it would not be by
force, the person who could have gotten it by force is Gen. Emeka
Ojukwu, but he didn’t. He later contested for several positions in
Nigeria, from senate to president; He revealed that in this present
struggle for Biafra, many have been killed ‘Are they not Igbo? Many
criminals have hijacked the protest.Biafra would come naturally and
not by force. I still thank the Army and police, it would have been
terrible. I thank President Buhari for his understanding and how he is
handling the matter?
On his title as Onowu of Igbo Land, he revealed that he was conferred
with the title by the Adama (King makers) Umudiana kindred, Nri on
24th Jan 1996, who bestowed the Ofo nri and Alo nri on him in
recognition of his past achievements as a most eminent Igbo man and
the need to encourage him to fight for the projection of the Igbo man
in the scheme of things in the Nigerian polity.
On the day he was crowned, Gen Emeka Ojukwu was also crowned with him
on the same day with his wife Chief Bianca Ojukwu,while Ojukwu was
crowned Ezigbo, He was crowned his Onowu i.e traditional prime
minster, together with his wife Iyom Cecilia Obiageli Ozua Okoye. Only
two of them were given titles that day, after victory over a court
action trying to stop him from being crowned Onowu Igbo.
Going down memory lane, the Onowu revealed that he was earlier made
Onowu Awkuzu in 1976. And as Onowu Igbo Land (Igbonine) and Igbo
Regent, he conveys Chieftaincy titles on illustrious sons and
daughters of Igbo Land, as well as crowns ‘Ezi ndi Igbo’ in many parts
of Nigeria and abroad on deserving citizens. He was the one who
crowned Eze ndi Igbo in Lagos, Ibadan, Ikom, in Cameroun and Spain
etc. In Spain he was invited by Amb. Bianca Ojukwu where the Europeans
named him king of Africa.
He is known in Igbo Land as ‘Aka n’echi echichi’ ie one who crowns
people; He also celebrates annually the iri ji ndi Igbo ie. new yam
festival of Igbo at his palace at Awkuzu. The Onowu Igbo, was the
first non indigene to be chairman of Onitsha L.G.A in 1983, comprising
of the present day Onitsha North, Onitsha South and Ogbaru. He also
served as former Director of Anambra State Housing Development
Corporation, Awka for 4 years during Gov. Chinwoke Mbadinuju’s
government.
