There are just too many carnivals in Nigeria. It has suddenly become too common! Even Calabar Carnival has lost its touch. Let our leaders be innovative na.

At that carnival, the following would happen..

Some will meet their life partners
Some will get kidnapped for ritual
Some will be raped
Some will be mugged
Some will get drunk
Some will fight
Some will really have a good time
Depending on how they conduct themselves
Happy holiday..

Carnivals should be banned in this country. it's becoming rather embarassing. All the carnivals from Calabar to Lagos to Port Hacourt to Owerri all look the same to me. This is Africa for fvck sake and not the west indies. We should promote cultural festivals rather than this BS.

I don write tire to Various cultural bodies on this,.. No effect.... They claim patronage wont be high if it is Afrocentric....

These Carnivals should be bordered around our culture only and not some American and Caribbean custom.....

The carnival should be traditional, not all this Caribbean style carnival. That should be solely for Akwa Ibom, in my opinion.

Let us try to promote and celebrate our culture, art and customs.

Imagine having various traditioanl dancers line the street and various order cultural symbols and practice from the whole igbo town and villages rolling down the street of owerri with igbo music.

Nna imo state can be the home of Igbo carnival. That is a unique selling brand, not everybody doing the same-thing. That is boring. In my Opinion!

Akwa Ibom has no carnival. I guess you meant Cross Rivers (Calabar Carnival)?

Hope the costumes are made here in Nigeria? If not its just another form of wasting foreign exchange.

I tire o! Colonial mentality is worrying us. Personally, I believe we should come up with something truly unique. Something that people can actually say belongs to us. We should patronise our New Yam Festivals, Traditional Community Festivals, etc and bring them all together in a national event that moves from state capital to capital every festive season. That one will be unique to Nigeria and Nigeria alone.

For now, these plagiarised carnivals are nothing but licentious, nude, hegemonic parties thrown to waste money and attract attention.

You are so on point. I dunno why we can't showcase our culture rather than import wholesale some foreign thing that won't earn anyone a penny. If I was a tourist, why would I want to watch Imo carnival when Brazil is there?

We really need to sell ourselves in this country. Hian!

@ Ujoatu,
It's Owerri going agog, while the rest of Imo state lays prostrate from abandoned government projects.

Enjoy your Owerri fun with your governor that has since become literary possessed with obsession with Owerri.

Gbam! Ala igbo only need one major carnival and it should be done in Imo State with all the various towns converging on Owerri.

I tell you people will leave their base in Christmas not to miss that show.

If I want to see naked women, Notting hill carnival UK is there. Brazilian carnival is there. Even Trinadad and tobago carnival is there. Imo should capitalise on a unique selling point, which is the igbo culture and age old igbo carnival but present it larger, bigger and bolder than ever with the full igboo cultural and artistic display.

Very colourful event.
