I was discussing with a friend yesterday and we were going on about the spate of crime in Lagos, lamenting that things are taking a turn for the worse.
Then he began to tell me his experience with robbers who paid a visit to his compound at Ikeja last week. According to him, they seem to get smarter and smarter. They visited them with POS machines and moved from flat to flat, demanding you make transactions into their account at gunpoint. Once the transaction pulls through, they take your cards, record your pin and they are off to the next flat.

In this way, they drained virtually all the cash in his 3 accounts over the weekend.
Have you been a victim of this mode of crime, come in and share your experience.

Any Robber that tries this type of "NollyWood" robbery will be in jail faster than they can withdraw the stolen money.

So, if they forcefully make me transfer the money to their account..... does that account not have records or does my own banking details not show where the money went to?

I think the Poster is just trying to "figure out" if he can successfully rob people, using this method.

My advice: please try it, omo'ole!

Re: Beware! New Mode Of Robbery In Lagos. by MRBrownJ: 9:25am On Dec 28, 2015
very possible, since identity fraud is rampant. here is how it would work:
person opens a business account with POS in Nigeria with a stolen ID and fraudulent infos (or simply pay someone for such service), then they get the money into the account and immediately transfer the money into another account across the world, then to another and another, and finally after a few transactions, into some equally fake account in China or Iran (or some anonymous account in the Cayman Island). the thief will have plenty of time to withdraw ALL the cash, before the money could be traced back anywhere.

as for guns, i think that this is what Nigeria needs. people having the means to defend themselves, their families and their homes.

we'll have to weigh the benefits of your action against the risks. Having cards makes financial transactions alot easier. It would also be a hard and almost impossible sell to tell robbers that you've got no card. We only can imagine their reaction on your body as they would take out the beauty from your face.
I think I would have to move most of my serious cash to a specific account and do away with the ATM card while I maintain the other account with some cash, keeping the ATM. May God not allow us experience evil.

That's why I always go out with the ATM card that have little money in it then keep my main card at home...

Why are many people finding it hard to believe the story?? Is it not possible??

#theives/robbers always come with new ideas and new ways of doing their stuff.

This is na wash! Robbers came with a gun and POS and not asking for cash.
Re: Beware! New Mode Of Robbery In Lagos. by tunergy(m): 9:29am On Dec 28, 2015
Considering the requirements to own a POS machine, i doubt if anyone will be DUMB enough to go and rob with such. This is absolutely INCREDULOUS.

If this story is true, the thieves should be in jail already. The machine have a record of their bank and account numbers and company name. BVN should trace all their bank accounts in Nigeria. Unless, the POSs are processing through a foreign merchant. Intuit any one?.

It's possible for armed rubbers in naija to do it..... But it's also easy to locate dem.....

Guys this is 2015, let move forward. If you have two accounts, at least one is linked to your ATM card with a transaction limits. Speaking to this issue of POS robbers; some instances POS transactions takes EOD so you have some free time on your hand to stop it. Memories your bank customer care number some work 24hrs now. EOD means end of day at least 24hrs. BVN-Biometric Verification Number is another sure way to catch them. ATM card has tremendous benefit ranging from cash withdrawal, bills payment, airtime topup. We should not allow some stupid ragtag to stop us from moving forward...just my thoughts

Hope they also asked if it was savings or current account?

I find this hard to believe though. Robbers like physical cash as much as possible.

So imagine they wipe all our accounts over the weekend;

1. How will they withdraw all the fund over the weekend, since there is a limit to how much you can collect via the ATM, even if they transfer to another account or bank

2. So your friend could not contact his bank to have his card blocked and account frozen immediately the robbers left?

exactly. story makes no sense.

most especially as bank transfers leave a clear paper trail

You guys don't seem to believe, indeed I also didn't believe ab-initio. This robbery took place during this festive holidays. We believe when the banks reopen, there would be a clearer lead to this incident. Whatever the development is, I would keep this community informed. Thanks all, just be careful.

You wonder how folks wire cash from people's accounts without leaving a trace? Or you really think robbers who engage in such crimes as this wouldn't have a computer/IT guru in their team? I really want us to be balanced in our submissions.

Guys the best way to reduce risk associated with having ATM Cards is to limit the amount of funds in them. Maintain two or more account and only keep money you need for immediate use on the account tied to the ATM. With online banking , quickteller , mobile money etc you can easily move funds to the account with ATM. #Crimealert
may u flourish in wisdom..scream amen!
