He struts the stage, all eyes riveted on his majestic mien, sparkling white suit reflects the hues from the giant strobes lighting up the auditorium. He works the crowd like a virtuoso, leading them in a frenzied service, punctuated with screams of Alleluia from the fifty thousand strong crowd packed in the auditorium. The audience is held spellbound as he pauses his teachings occasionally to prophesy to his waiting audience; such prophecies usually range from better finances to miraculous marriages and babies.
To the unschooled, this seemingly chaotic occasion may be mistaken for a concert of sorts, but to the faithful who mill to the Caananland headquarters of the living faith church, this is a typical Sunday service, and the master of ceremonies is the charismatic Bishop David Oyedepo, who founded his global ministry three decades ago in the dusty town of Kaduna after he claimed to have received a vision from God to liberate men from the shackles of satanic bondage.
And for the past thirty years, he has unwaveringly followed “the mandate” as he famously refers to his life’s work.
The man called Papa by his followers and admirers seems not to be resting on his oars as his ministry is doing better than ever. With his operations headquarters at Ota, Ogun state Nigeria, (a few meters away from the farm of the nations former president and the bishops good friend, General Olusegun Obasanjo), he controls the activities of the worldwide mission in a businesslike fashion that would make the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies blush with envy. Penetrating into the upper echelons of the organization may prove extremely difficult as the Bishop and his employees are not known to be loose mouthed about their financial activities, but the Bishop has been known to run with extreme efficiency, hiring and firing as is necessary for the advancement of the kingdom.
