Why Do Nigerian Youths Support Corruption? by obrien29(m): 11:34am On Jan 01, 2016
There is no doubt that corruption is one of the problems haunting the Giant of Africa called Nigeria. And for those who might not understand what this corruption really is, we will have to explain the term. According to Word Web, “corruption is lack of integrity or honesty (especially susceptibility to bribery); use of a position of trust for dishonest gain”.
It is widely agreed that corruption subverts justice, hampers economic growth and as well as destroys trust. However, this evil called corruption has proven too strong for the Nigerian government and her people to conquer. It has refused to die and wither away. What is the cause of its stubbornness?
One of the causes of its refusal to die is that Nigerians support and even breed corruption. Notwithstanding that many a times, fingers are being pointed to the crop of people in power as the corrupt ones; many of the followers are also corrupt in their dealings and in their minds. Even the energetic youths who are the future leaders of this country, who should be the ones fighting this problem in order to pave way for their own better future fight tooth and nail to defend corrupt leaders.
It is only in Nigeria that people own thieves in the broad daylight. A youth with promising future will exert his energy defending a proven thief; after all, he is his person and so should not be prosecuted. Well, my own theory is that as far as the old men and women in power still steals our commonwealth and the youths defends them, corruption will never be conquered. That’s my take.
