It has become a recurring decimal to see people who present themselves as die-hard President Jonathan followers threaten fire and brimstone and promise the current Buhari government a barrage of criticisms and insults in the same measure with which it was done to the Jonathan government in all six years of it’s existence. It is laughable because most of these people see criticism or opposition as an immutable end in itself. That is where they get it wrong. Being in the opposition and criticizing government is a means to an end and not an end in itself. In other words, being in the opposition has a goal to achieve. And that goal is not certainly to criticize or pull down the government of the day by all means.

Majority of us who criticized the performances of President Goodluck Jonathan were his staunchest supporters in 2011 and at the early stages of his tenure. We supported him in 2011 because we believed him when he promised a dint of fresh air. We turned full circle round from being ardent believers to his critics when the rising expectations we had were replaced with rising frustrations. His body language and utterances showed clearly that we were in for a different ride from what he promised during his electoral campaigns. At the end his scorecard did not guarantee him re-election.

Today Buhari is the president elect. Just like Jonathan in 2011, we elected Buhari because of his track record of having maintained a reasonable level of integrity and also because of the CHANGE he promised during his electoral campaigns. Just like in Jonathan’s case, we will hold Buhari accountable to his promises. The job of doing that is not the exclusive reserve of those who are aggrieved by Jonathan’s loss. Those of us who rose to the occasion and rooted for him in spite of all the intimidation and insults are even in a more moral acceptable position to demand an account of his stewardship. The job of holding Buhari accountable to his promises is equally that of every Nigerian, irrespective of party affiliations, ethnicity, religion or any other segmental cleavage.
