Varicose vein is a swollen that is raised above the surface of the skin. They are dark purple or blue in color, and can look like cords or very twisted and bulging.

They are found most often on the backs of the calves or on the inside of the leg, anywhere from the groin to the ankle. During pregnancy, varicose veins called hemorrhoids can form in the vagina or around the anus.

When someone discovers a varicose vein anywhere on the body, it can be an ugly discovery and embarrassing. Varicose veins are commonly found on the legs and arms.

But most importantly and in rare cases, some men may develop small varicose vein on the penis.

Varicose veins are more obvious on the erect penis. In some cases, the varicose vein may be seen when the penis is flaccid. The vein may feel lumpy, but it is usually not tender.

The vein is generally engorged with blood and thickens with time. A corresponding condition seen in the female is called Mondor's disease — which is a thick varicose vein seen on the breast.

Here truths you should know about penile varicose veins:

1. Causes of Penile varicose vein

It has been proven that varicose vein on the penis is most likely caused by or related to a small blood clot in one of the superficial veins of the penis.

This small clot of blood leads to thickening of the vein and eventual fibrosis. The condition is not related to masturbation or sexual activity.

In some cases, direct trauma to the penis may be a cause of injury to the superficial veins.

2. Penile Varicose Vein Diagnosis

The diagnosis of a varicose vein on the penis is difficult and deceptive because there is another condition of the penis which may mimic it. This unrelated condition, known as lymphangisclerosis, is due to thickening of a lymphatic vessel.

It also feels hard and lumpy. It is not blue in color, but white. It can be seen on both the erect and flaccid penis.
