FOLLOWING disquiet in the House over how N160 million was expended on a recent retreat by the lawmakers in Kano and Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Leader, House of Representatives, Tunde Akogun, yesterday absolved himself of complicity in the alleged misappropriation of the money.

Also, the lawmakers have asked the House leadership to account for N130 million spent on the Afro-Arab Parliaments summit hosted by Nigeria in April, which they alleged had been misappropriated.

A source at the National Assembly yesterday disclosed that contrary to speculations, only N160 million, and not N270 million, was budgeted for the Kano and Uyo retreat, which was attended by 328 members.

In a statement yesterday, Akogun explained that the retreat was conducted in a transparent manner, devoid of any shady deals, stressing that all schedules were delegated to committee members and carried out accordingly at the two venues.

His words: "The planning and execution of the retreat exercise was done in strict accordance with the best principles of due process, transparency and accountability. The allegations of financial mismanagement being bandied about are only in the figments of the imaginations of a few uninformed persons."
