Every government prides its self with her military, and the strength of any government is measured by its ability to protect her democracy. This fact of military determining the sovereignty of nations prompt Adolf Hitler to say: “Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live”.

The military, also called the armed forces, is defined as the forces authorized to use deadly force, and weapons, to support the interests of the state and some or all of its citizens. Deducting from the definition military formation is therefore, seen as the arrangement or deployment of moving military forces such as infantry, cavalry, AFVs, military aircraft, or naval vessels. Thus; military is a requisite to forming political government as they are the body that are capable of protecting individual-nation from external and internal aggressions, as war tend to start once diplomacy fails.

The presence of military in human society predates contemporary political structure (democracy). It dates back to the era of autocracy (kings, empire) i.e. B.C and early A.D. The role military play towards attaining democracy cannot be over emphasized, having known that most independent nations got independence through the barrels. Every organization has the attribute of a coin (two-sided), classified positivism and negativism. Military as a form of an organization have the coin attribute, therefore, measures, policy, rules, regulations, etc. are set within and outside military formation to guard against the use of raw/naked power that sometimes shows its ugly head. Negativism if not checked in the military, can lead to coup de tat, intimidation of civilians, breaking of the law etc.

Though military are sometimes criticized for some of their extremism, democracy still depends on her for survival.
