Consistent poor grades can lead to depression in any student. In tertiary institutions, there is always perceptible apprehension in the air, whenever examination results are published. There have been several cases of students collapsing at the results board due to their inability to meet up with a targeted grade. In many schools, poor grades can lead to a forceful withdrawal of students from one course to another, or in the long run, they can be expelled. The depressive consequences that come with being expelled can lead to schizophrenia or even suicidal attempts in students who do not have the emotional strength to cope with this situation. This is why it is imperative for students to try as much as possible to avoid getting bad grades.

Here are few tips on how to have good grades in your academics:

Study a satisfactory course
Recently, the story of a student who graduated summa cum laude after bagging 17 carry-overs went viral on the internet. The story has it that, a twist of fate pushed him into studying Physics (a course he really never liked), when he actually applied for Medicine. The lack of interest in Physics led him into failing his courses, that he later had to voluntarily withdraw from school and apply for another course that shared some similarities with Medicine. This led to his success!

Like him, several students are studying what they dislike. This can lead to poor grades. Even if you don't fail, you will end up graduating without joy/fulfillment. If you cannot get your course of passion, apply for one that has some similarities to it.

Study smartly
Several successful students have argued that it is not about how many hours you spend studying; it is about how smartly you study. Evaluate yourself and know how easily you assimilate. Spend more time on your areas of weakness. Meet with senior colleagues who have scaled through the hurdle of that particular lecturer's course, and try as much as possible to acquire all the study materials you require.

Study with your colleagues
Put aside gender or age ego and shyness to discuss ask questions from your colleagues who have a better understanding of a particular course or topic. Even when you understand the course, dialogue with your colleagues will give you a better understand of it.
