First, it is your duty as a responsible citizen to respond to police invitations. When invited, you are adviced to follow them. Dont argue. Here are the 8 things you need to know when invited.

1. What offences you are accused of.
When you arrive at the police station, it is your constitutional right to be informed of the charges or allegations against you by the I.P.O. The only exceptional cases here is if you are arrested on the spot of a crime you commited.

2. Your right to be heard or make your defense

After informing you of your offense or allegations, it is your right to be heard. It is very wrong for any police officer to shut you up, you must be allowed to make your defense or state your own side of the story. Please, do not allow any police officer to put words in your mouth.

3. You cannot be arrested for the offense of another person

4. You are not under obligations to make statement

A statement is just a brief summary of the facts you know about. Be cautious when you write statement because whatever you write may be used against you. Your statement is your defense. You do not become accused because you write a statement but until the police charge you to court.

5. Your right to write your statement yourself

Do not allow any police officer write a statement for you. It is wrong! They can only do so if you cannot read and write. Whatever questions the I.P.O is asking you, make sure you are writing the response yourself. Also, do not allow any police officer to dictate what to write.

6. Right not to make statement until you see your lawyer(see section 35 subsection 2)

7. It is your right not to be tortured to make any statement

it is unconstitutional for Nigeria police to detain and tutor you to make a statement because any person alleged to have commited a crime remains a suspect and must be treated a such

8. Your right not to make any statement under duress

Any statement you are not allow to make voluntarily is regarded as "duress" and as such will not be allowed in the court of law to be used against the accused person
