Whether you're single or married,it's important to think about family planning and set your reproductive goals. Couples should together set their reproductive goals and decide on the child spacing method to adopt.
See, the benefits of family planning are too many... The following are no doubts the main benefits of child spacing:
•Child spacing helps to enhance a woman's well being
•Family planning can help reduce maternal death rate by delaying motherhood
•Child spacing can help protect a woman from unwanted pregnancy, thus preventing unsafe abortion
•With family planning, you can avoid pregnancy at 'old age' and pregnancy under stress or bad medical condition
But the big question ever asked is -what is the most suitable family planning method?
There are various family planning methods you can choose from, but not all of these methods are suitable for you. However, there is at least one suitable method available for everyone.
"The efficacy of all child spacing methods is based on correct and consistent use..."
Before you choose any family planning method make sure you answer the following questions:
• How well does this family planning method prevent pregnancy(how effective is it)?
• Does it protect against STIs, if yes, how well?
• Is it safe or how safe is it?
•Is it ease to use?
• Can I put up with its side effects?
• Does it have any permanent side effect?
• What are it advantages and disadvantages?
Answers to these questions will help you make a sound decision on which method to settle for.
This post will give you much of the information you will need to decide whether to try this method or that... However, it should not be substituted for a professional advice from your healthcare provider.

[b] Combined Oral Contraception:
This method of child spacing is believed to be up to 99% effective with correct and consistent use.
It contain combinations of estrogen and progestone (these are man made hormones that prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation- the release of egg from the ovaries).
It reduces risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer by about 50%.
It works better when taken at about the same time daily
It doesn't protect against STIs
You may experience mood changes while on the pill
It's not safe for women with personal or family history of heart disease, migraine, overweight, uncontrolled hypertension,...
Not recommended for a smoker who is over 35 years old
The artificial hormones in the pill make it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus (womb) by thickening the mucus at the cervix.

It doesn't interfere with intercourse
It doesn't protect against STIs too

Injectables:
This method is belived to be around 99% effective when used correctly and consistently.
This is a good contraceptive choice for women who cannot use any child spacing method that contain estrogen. It contains progesterone only- which prevents the release of egg from the ovary and it also stops sperm from getting to the eggs.
There are three types of contraception injections:
1. Depo-provera (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or DMPA)- it lasts for 12 week 2. Noristerat- lasts for 8 weeks 3. Sayana Press, which lasts for 13 weeks. Depo-provera and Noristerat are more common in Nigeria.
This family planning method does not protect against STIs
You may experience irregular or prolonged bleeding as a first timer

Implant
This method is said to be 99% effective when used correctly and consistently.
This is a thin and flexible, 'matchstick- size' plastic object used for preventing pregnancy. It is inserted into the inner surface(under the skin) of your upper arms. It contains a hormone called progestin which stops eggs from leaving the ovary (ovulation inhibition).
This object keeps sperm from getting to the eggs by continuously releasing a small amount of progestin into your body
It provides 5 years protection- it may be less effective towards the end of the fifth year though
It doesn't protect against STIs
It may affect a developing baby when used during pregnancy
You may experience the following: headache, Pelvic pain, breast pain, weight gain if you use this method
The most common brand in Nigeria is Jadelle
This is a long acting and reversible contraceptive

Condom
This method is believed to be 99% effective when used appropriately and consistently.
Condom is a good barrier method of child spacing which stops sperm and transmittable infections from passing between partners during intercourse.
There are male and female condoms.
Male condom is rolled on a man's erected 'tool' while female condom is inserted deep into a woman's honeypot before intercourse.
It can protect against STIs
Make sure you always check the expiry date before using it
It helps prevent cervical cancer
It can be bought cheaply and easily accessible
