What to do depends upon the circumstances and severity of the injury. Here’s an advice on dealing with dog bites:


1. Be sure to clean with soap and running water, disinfect the wound thoroughly, because all animal bites can transmit bacteria and cause infection.


2. Ascertain the circumstance of the bite. If the animal that bit you seems to be a stray dog and is partially paralyzed, acts aggressively, or behaves in a strange way e.g swallows all sorts of objects, then it may be rabid dog. If however it was in territorial defence, then intimate the owner. In both cases , adhere strictly to number 1 above.


3. If the dog’s owner is present, then share names and contact numbers so you can get proof of rabies vaccination from them and from the veterinarian. Pets vaccinated aggainst rabbies are issued certificates of vaccination.
