They are personal.....however, there is a trend among employers, and not only in Nigeria....to look at what you post on Facebook, and to make decisions on whether to employ or to sack you on your postings.

While the University should not have fired him,if he wanted to make comments like that....he should have done so anonymously.Especially as his comments could be seen as incendiary.

BUT IS THAT THE RIGHT THING

It is not...but here is the problem

Employers unfortunately do read employees facebook postings. And recently...in a court ruling (In Europe mind)....this was given legal sanction

Workers were warned yesterday by the European Court of Human Rights that their employers can now legally snoop on private Facebook, WhatsApp and email messages.

The landmark ruling came following the case of a Romanian engineer who was sacked after sending messages to his fiancee and brother during work hours using Yahoo Messenger on a company-owned device.

ECHR judges sided with his employer, deciding that the worker had been professionally negligent and bosses should be able to check during work hours what their employees are doing....http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/your-boss-can-now-read-7177212

BUT....the fact remains that

1.The guy was not posting in his capacity as a University lecturer.....or on the university's official facebook pages,or related social media accounts thereof

2.As such he might have a case to be reinstated/not sacked based on no 1 above.

But....using my backyard legal skills....the University could argue that his comments constitute a threat to the public peace...which might go down against our lecturer (I explained in detail upthread). As Oliver Wendell Holmes, ex Justice of the US Supreme Court once said....The right to free speech does not extend to shouting ''Fire'' in a crowded theater (IE assembly hall).

All in all....I think the lecturer should keep his job. Should he be sacked....it is going to be one very interesting court case, I daresay....the kind that would become precedent for future cases even outside Nigeria.
