I just don't know which planet you guys are from. The police is free to use any strategy they deem suitable in any circumstance as long as it guarantees result. The victim was freed when the kidnapper knew that his wife was in police custody. A local problem only requires a local solution.

Granted in civilized country, the wife may not necessarily be arrested. In the same token, there is something called "ACCESSORY AFTER THE FACT". Anyone who renders any help to a criminal (after a crime is committed) can be charged as part of the crime. Either by helping the criminal to elude the law, or hide fruits of the crime or evidence of the crime.

The wife need to explain who owns the AK47 in her house. As far as the police is concerned, she is the resident of the house. She is the one found there. Regardless of who owns the rifle, she answers to the ownership of the house at the moment.

Also kidnappers do kidnap wife, children or parents of anyone they want to extort money from because they cannot get to the main target if he has security detail. They go for a softer target.

In the same token, i support 100% that police can detain the wife, children and parents of anybody involved in kidnapping. That will make these low-lifers think again once they know that they can no longer commit their crime without coming back to hunt their family.

In fact i think the senate should put it into law that the police can detain the family member and extended family members of any wanted kidnappers. Most people know what their husband/son do.

One day, you are selling palm oil and the next day, there is a bag of millions in your house and you didnt think that nothing is wrong?

You must be re.tarded. The wife of d kidnapper is 100% innocent, and should not be held liable for her husband's crimes. In saner countries, every police officer who took part in that arrest will be dismissed from d police force, and face criminal prosecution. That is d height of st.upidity, arresting a law-abiding individual just because he/she is married or biologically related to a criminal. How I wish d woman is enlightened enough to sue d entire Nigerian police force for billions of naira. I sometimes wonder if we are cursed in this country.

No one is supporting the detention of relatives of criminals as ransom for their surrender, because by definition a criminal may not even care about their relatives enough to give themeselves up. But it may be required to question and/or pressure the relatives to provide crucial information for the capture of the suspects.

I am sure that you know that kidnapping is a heinous crime - worse than armed robbery, and sometimes extreme circumstances require extreme measures.
