THE USE OF PAIN KILLERS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE KIDNEYS
In recent times, there has be there has been an increase the rate of analgesic abuse in Nigeria. This is because many of them are readily available over the counter and many are ignorant of the devastating effect long term use can cause. Abuse is common among those who do physically engaging jobs such as the bricklayers ,danfo drivers, factory workers ,okada riders, etc. most of them come down with body ache and headache after a longs day job and they resort to analgesics use because they have to be up and doing the next day in order to make ends meet . Some of the commonly abused analgesic in this environment include acetaminophens such as paracetamol ,panadol, NSAID such as ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Aspirin(Alabukun , Laiilah , Daga ) and Codiene to mention but a few. Chronic abuse of analgesic gradually damages the kidney leading to a condition known as Analgesic Nephropathy.
Analgesic Nephropathy may present suddenly but more commonly takes a long time, at which point the damage to the kidney might be irreversible. A person taking two tablet of paracetamol daily will come down analgesic nephropathy in about five years. This is how quick the condition can develop. Patient with analgesic nephropathy may require dialysis to remove waste from the body .a procedure which cost about 30-40, 000 naira per session and some people may require as much as two sessions per week. And if the kidney does not regain functionality, a renal transplant is indicated. And this cost as much as 4 to 7 million naira.
