Niger State At 40 : The Journey So Far

Niger state is 40years today Wednesday, 3rd February 2016..
From the days of then Navy Commander Murtala Nyako, aka baba mungoro, who delivers a budget of N105m on 1st April 1976 to the present administration of His Excellency, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello who presented a budget of N74.76b to the state house of assembly on 31st Dec 2015.

There has been nine military administrators and four Executive Governors that have ruled the state during these 40years period.

1. Commander Murtala Nyako
2. Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe
3. Brigadier Ola Oni..
4. Alhaji Muhammad Awwal Ibrahim
5. Lt. Col. David Mark
6. Col. Garba Ali Mohammed (aka ka rantse)
7. Col. Lawan Gwadabe
8. Dr. Musa Inuwa (Late)
9. CP. Simeon Oduoye
10. Col. Habibu Shuaibu
11. Engr. Abdulkadir Kure
12. Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu

Military regimes are xterised by decrees and so the people did not even know how the monthly allocations were shared at that time.

The military administrators on the other hand did their best in the area of provision of infrastrutures and projects than the democratically elected governors who despite the billions in their disposal, despite the consistent sharing of excess crude accounts could not meet the expectation of the people.

While Former Governor Muhammad Awwal Ibrahim, now emir of Suleja laid the foundation of some projects before the military intervention, Late former Governor Musa Inuwa can only be remembered for the mass sack of civil servants across the state.

The actual dividends of democracy is supposed to have started in 1999, especially with the consistent rise in the price of crude oil, which is the major source of revenue for all the three tiers of government.

Former Governor Abdulkadir Kure( 1999-2007) got close to N500b in his eight years as the governor of the state, he established the IBB University as one of his legacies, but ended up using local govt joint account to share money to politicians, etc.

Former Govenor, Dr. Muazu Babanguda Aliyu(2007-2015),a former federal permanent secretary,on the other hand, got close to N800b. He came in with lots of expectation and dreams on various PPP projects but ended up performing worst than his predecessor.

We pray that the present administration of the CHANGE MANTRA of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello will change the fortune of the state through diversification to other sectors of the economy which the state has in abundance…

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON NIGER @ 40…
