The current state of Education in this country should be a source of concern to all parties involved; I witnessed an all-time low today; SS 2 students could barely read a literary text in a literature class.. I want to start a readers' club in the school. A club where reading will be encouraged and rewarded... However I need ideas on how to make it work... Help! Help! Faced an identical issue.
What I did was I started holding lessons for them from 3pm-5pm. But what we were reading was a picture book for young readers 'Tom Sawyer', a book by Mark Twain. I had access to about 10 copies. From there, we graduated to Junior Literatures; learning 3-letter, 4-letter, 5-letter and 6-letter words all along.

It's a gradual process and don't expect perfection till the end of your service year. Just ensure the lessons continue, maybe by other concerned fellows. One day, what you started will bear fruits.
