A video has been made public which shows journalists under the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) discussing how they get tips tagged “transport money” from the Lagos commissioner of police, among other things.

The Police PRO, Dolapo Badmus is heard at the beginning of the footage published by Sahara TV pleading with the journalists to carry out their duties with fairness and objectivity, noting that the existence of bad eggs within the police force is not an exclusive phenomenon.

Badmus pointed out that it is a disservice to the force and the nation at large to rubbish the entire police force as a result of the acts of certain officers. In response, CRAN president Mr Christopher Orji advised the Lagos PPRO to work with the association for efficiency, as not all the journaists who attend press conferences will publish the report.

Orji openly admitted that he had twice received money from the Lagos commissioner of police, the last being N100,000. Orji lamented that the money was inadequate for sharing among the journalists as television reporters often took a major bulk of it.

“I cannot give television houses N10,000 each. Maybe we are 70 that came for assignment, I am telling you the truth, the television will say ‘no, we used to collect N20,000’ I will plead with them and give them N15,000. Calculate it, if they are 4, that is N60,000 out of N150,000, what is left is N90,000,” Orji explained.

When some other journalists within the room hinted that he was being recorded, Orji said “it does not matter.” The CRAN president further lamented that the commissioner of police had so far failed to fulfil his promise to rebuild the CRAN press centre. In response, Ms Badmus assured that the commissioner will keep his word.
