Metabolic syndrome is a condition that increases the risk of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.

People with metabolic syndrome have at least three of the following traits:

Waist more than 40 inches around in men or 35 inches in women
BMI greater than 30 (Obesity)
Blood triglyceride levels of 150 or greater
HDL, or “good” cholesterol, less than 40 in men or less than 50 in women
Blood pressure of 130/85 or more (Hypertension)
Fasting blood sugar of 110 or more (Diabetes mellitus)


Poor diet and lack of physical activity are thought to promote metabolic syndrome.
