. . . Unless You Change What Is In Your Heart

Change is craved by every Nigerian, a change for the better. In the hearts of the young & old, the poor and the rich, the elite and the masses, Nigerians of every strata imaginable, have a burning desire that yearns for a government that does things differently from what is obtainable, that is, Nigerians demand an end to impunity, rights violations, corruption and virtually all that seems to have gone wrong in the polity. In essence Nigerians want a system in which a court does not sentence a man to 40 years imprisonment for the theft of a phone while sentencing another who steals or should I say “misappropriated” billions of Naira for just 2 years to a maximum of 5 years.

But Who?
But the question arises, who will change the country for a brighter future? The first school of thought believes in messianic change. This school of thought holds’ that the country would become a better place when it one day stumbles across a messiah sent to redeem it. Another school of thought holds to turn the course of the nation, Nigerians must reform its current institutions who would act as agents of change and in essence rectify various wrongs within the society. The third school of thought holds’ that the status quo is better; either that the status quo serves Nigeria better or that changing the course of the nation could be a very traumatic affair.

The problem of the first school of thought, is simple, relying on wishful thinking is very dangerous and imprudent. Imagine you were feeling the pangs of hunger and you happened to be a stranger in a new place with little or no friend, hiding in a room and expecting food to miraculously descend from heaven is hardly a smart thing to do. is it? While I personally believe in miracles, I do believe in applying it in the right context, which is, people resort to miracles when they have done everything humanly possible to achieve a goal but the situation remains impervious to change. It is wrong headed to resort to such thinking when little or no attempt have been made to effect change in Nigeria. Furthermore our duty before God is to be stand for what is right and just. Hence this school of thought cannot be relied upon to change Nigeria, unfortunately a lot of people subscribed to this point of view.

Moving on, the second school of thought seems to make a good case, which is, by reforming the institutions that serve Nigerians through well-articulated policies, Nigeria would undergo a tremendous change. This school of thought relies on the establishment to self-reform, but the establishment has no incentive to change. The establishment benefits from the way governance is done so why would they want to change it? An alternative is for the opposition to take charge of government through elections, while this alternative could be feasible, elections in Nigeria tend to suffer corruption and manipulation. Despite attempts towards correcting defective elections, free & fair elections remain a long dream. So the second school of thought while capable of solving the issues fail to address the very problem every Nigerian has to grapple.

The third school of thought holds that the status quo should be maintained. They generally believe that the situation in the country is alright or the status quo serves Nigeria better. But like the first school of thought, they play the role of the proverbial ostrich, ignoring a problem does not solve it rather it allows it to grow till it eventually consumes you.

The solution lies much deeper, Nigeria plethora of problems are made by Nigerians mostly self inflicted blows. Solving this problem requires recognizing the human hands creating them.

The Solution – Look Inwards
Nigeria desire change, the solution is multi-layered but it begins with accepting that change start with us. Take for example, if our leaders are ethnic jingoists it means we as a people are also ethnic jingoists – this true as it is common for Nigerians to rally round their leaders accused of corruption because he is son of the soil, tribal consideration tend to take front stage in a lot of things we do, same go for religious bigotry, corruption etc. One would be amazed that stealing of public funds by elected officials or public servant happen not because they simply dip their fingers into the pie but a multi-layered collusion between such officials, High ranking civil servants and low ranking civil servants. This indicates that when we talk of our leaders as being corrupt, we should remember there exist rotten individuals who are willing to connive with such leaders to plundered the wealth of the nation.

In the Qur’an we read in 13th sura, Sura Ar Rad verse 11 : . . . Allah does not change a people’s lot unless they change what is in their heart . . .
In essence for Nigeria to change for the better Nigerians need to change, Nigerians need to be the change they want to see. Good people produce good leaders and good leaders lead justly. It is from this pool of changed people would the right set of reforms be implemented and the quantum leap Nigerians are seeking would achieved. It is my hope that we all fulfil our own part in changing Nigeria for a more prosperous future, by rejecting all the negatives, tribalism, corruption, nepotism etc.
