Was Wizkid Ever Original With His Music? by Thomsyne(m): 12:21am On Feb 19, 2016
Earlier this year in January, we heard of the
Wizkid-Dammy Krane Saga in which the Modern
Fuji styled artiste accused Wizkid of stealing
his idea for hit track Final {Baba Nla}. A claim
which Kwam 1’s daughter affirmed to be true.
And i thought, ‘Oh… That’s unfortunate but
it happens in the Nigerian music industry’.
But in recent times, as a DJ, I have been
listening to and reading more about Nigerian
Old School music {I wasn’t born in the early
1990s you know}. I read more about Fela,
listened to some of his music and noticed little
similarities between he and Wizkid when it
comes to afro beats.

I was listening to one of Fela’s tracks {Can't even remember the title} and noticed some of
the lyrics of the track, ‘If you call woman
african woman she no go gree, she go say i be
lady ahh.’ I knew i had heard the lyrics
somewhere and immediately remembered ‘Jaiye
Jaiye’ in which the Starboy C.E.O featured
Femi Kuti. While reading up on Fela too on
Wikipedia, I also discovered ‘Expensive S**t’
was the title to one of Fela’s albums back in
the days. The same title was given to one of
Wizkid’s latest tracks that was heavily
influenced by Afro beats instruments. Am
sorry but isn’t an artiste supposed to be
original? Kiss Daniel sang ‘Good Time’, was
totally original and the track even had lyrical
meaning. People were able to judge that from
the official video directed by Aje Filmworks.

Wizkid’s also got a habit of jumping on dope
music covers. ‘Good Time’ is the latest. When
someone sent me a track with the title ‘Kiss
Daniel X Wizkid – Good Time Remix’ on BBM i
was like ‘Woah, this is gonna be really cool’
and downloaded it to my phone. I immediately
listened to it because I love the original track
so much and couldn’t wait to hear a
collaboration between the two superstar
artistes. All i heard was Wizkid rephrasing
what Kiss Daniel did in the original track and
discovered it was a cover not a collabo. I
hissed and deleted the track pronto. Was
really disappointed. Same thing this guy did
with ‘Lamba’ by Hakym The Dream and
Iyanya’s Sexy Mama. I consider it an act of
bullying by an A-list artiste jumping on a fast
rising artiste’s track cover knowing full well
their versions will be listened to more widely
than the original track.

The lyrics on tracks like hits ‘In my Bed’ was
totally off. From talking about a girl whose
body he wants in his bed to hailing politicians
was totally off. We all miss that ‘Holla at your
boy’, ‘Tease Me’ and ‘Don’t Dull’ crooner. But
is he ever going to come back to us?

Maybe Wizkid has run out of lyrics and doesn't have anything to sing again. He certainly
hasn’t released any mind-blowing track after
Ojuelegba sung in 2014. We can’t really
conclude can we? I guess we’ll just have to
watch and see.

Following the recent duel between the two celebs and the hassles that has been trailing their fracas both on social media and the dailies, it is important for the sake of contrasting and comparison that we have decided to take a quick look at their respective worth. Many of the data used here are actually from reliable sources and the calculations are verifiable enough. Perhaps you might want to use your calculators (lol). Click to read more…

There was an update on this matter from my BBM... I updated it since but my co-owner missed it an didn't report it here

This is the update

Update: DJ Smith on my BBM after reading my article made a contribution too. Some of the ‘Holla at Your Boy’ lyrics was gotten from Girls sang by Se7en a Korean artiste released earlier in 2010. Just google ‘Se7en – Girls’ and you’ll see what am talking about. The title ‘Holla at your Boy’ was gotten from the track and part of the lyrics were very very similar. They were just rephrased. Unfortunately the ‘Girls’ track didn’t receive much recognition. And here I was, thinking Wizkid was at least innovative when he started music. What a disappointment.
