Bonny, Nembe, Bille Jetties To Get Facelift …As Wike Plans To Boost Marine Transport

Soon Bonny, Bille and Nembe jetties at the Creek Road waterfront are to get facelift following an unscheduled visit by the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to the waterfront at the weekend.
Shortly after inspecting the condition of the jetties mostly used by traders and passengers from the riverine communities, Wike said the area will be revamped so as to develop an effective marine transport in the state.
The governor also announced the immediate commencement of the reconstruction of the Bille Jetty in Borikiri area of Port Harcourt for the conveyance of goods by ferries to the riverine communities.
Addressing traders at the Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt Township, where the Bille Jetty is located, Wike directed the total upgrade of the jetty, reconstruction of the facilities and the enhancement of the safety standards of the jetty.
He disclosed that Julius Berger Construction Company will be engaged to revamp the waterfront such that some of the shanties and makeshift buildings will give way for more befitting landing jetties with parking lots for vehicles.
The governor said: “I am not happy with the condition of this important jetty. That is why we will reconstruct the jetty and uplift the standards to enhance safe marine transport.
“We will also reconstruct the road leading to the jetty so that trucks and passengers can have access to the facility “.
Similarly, the governor, at the weekend, inspected on-going road projects in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local government areas.
He particularly urged the contractor handling the NLNG-Nkpogu Bridge to ensure that the laying of asphalt on the road and bridge is completed on schedule.
