The music industry in Nigeria is big business if you play your cards right. If you put in the good work, you can part with the fame and wealth the industry has to offer. However, the probability of blowing as an upcoming artiste is 10:90 if you commit one or more of the mistakes below.
1. Mistaking AutoTune for treble
The quest to be a musician at all cost has made many untalented musicians resort to auto tune. These upcoming artistes with terrible voices now auto-tune the living daylights out of their vocals and fool the public into thinking they can sing. This is why they never get invites for live shows because nobody wants to hear a robot sing.
2. Same lyrics, same beats, different hustlers
“Yo Yo! You know how we do it
Personally… professionally…
I see what you’re doing intentionally
Girl me want it physically
So give it to me give it to me radically
Emotionally… psychologically
You’re turning me on biologically
Sexually… dramatically”
Good luck with crappy lyrics!
3. The bad boy image no longer works
Most upcoming musicians think the only way they can achieve fame is by imitating Olamide image. Upcoming musicians should realize that artistes can also become ambassadors for brands and no decent brand would go for a celebrity who cuts an irresponsible image. Braiding 1/3 of your hair, dying your hair indomie colour, posting photos smoking weed and having the most bizzare haircuts would do you no good. No matter how small an artiste might be, taking such endorsement deals would mean more exposure, publicity and money for the artiste. Can a self acclaimed ‘bad boy’ or ‘bad girl’ be offered such? No!
4. Modelling or singing?
The new trend from upcoming artistes in Nigeria is to send tasteless photos in batches to entertainment bloggers before they release a single. The ladies feel the only way to announce their presence is by posing in half naked attires. Of late, the men have followed suit by releasing what is called ‘egg plant’ photo on their social media pages.
5. Unprofessional Videos
The theme of the music videos is always the same. Riding fancy cars, bottles of alcohols, red plastic cups, flashing fake dollars, clubbing, surrounded by naked women. This is overplayed! How do they expect not to fade into oblivion when there is no uniqueness?
Quality also comes into play in video production. In a bid to save cost, most upcoming artistes shoot their videos themselves or with the help of friends. Videos where your best friend is the director, your girlfriend is the vixen, your brother is the producer and your relatives are the video cast will never go beyond 122 views on Youtube. Everybody can’t be as lucky as Vic O.
In some cases, most upcoming musicians undermine creativity and would rather copy video scenes from foreign artistes. Some of them go as far as including scenes from foreign movies to create the effect they want. Your first music video should be an investment because first impression matters and would make or mar your career.
6. Not advertising
Recording a good track is never enough. You have to advertise yourself aggressively. Go on social networks, forums, musical blogs, Twitter, magazines and radio stations to push your music. Perform in shows, in schools, small events and anywhere possible that can put you out there. If your only publicity strategy is to pay radio presenters to air your song, what happens when you run out of money?
7. Hiding your face
A word of advice to upcoming artistes. TAKE OFF THE SUNGLASSES!!! You are new. We need to see your face if you are serious about fame. Not only that but sunglasses are made for outdoors. There is no sun indoors or at Quilox. It just looks plain silly.
8. Rome was not built in a day
It is worrisome how quick upcoming artistes are to add ‘For Booking Enquires, Contact 08xxxxxxx’ as soon as they release one BBM voice note.
Most upcoming artistes fail to realise they are a nobody, and nobody wants to hire a nobody to perform at their event at an outrageous rate. Always offer to perform at little or no charge at any event you are opportuned to attend. In due time, your popularity and the money it comes with will never be a problem.
