After the meeting of the NUpengassan and NNPC top mgt, the total strike action embarked upon by the unions have been suspended.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) staff union has suspended its industrial action, which shut down all facilities of the corporation on Wednesday.

Announcing the end of the strike action, NNPC, via its Twitter handle, said the unions are now ready to work in the restructuring of a new NNPC.

“Sequel to exhaustive deliberations between our group managing director and PENGASSAN and NUPENG, the corporate-wide strike has been suspended,” the NNPC said Thursday on its Twitter account.

“The Group Executive Councils of PENGASSAN and NUPENG have resolved to support the restructuring and change process towards a #NewNNPC.”

Labour unions in Nigeria’s oil sector, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Seniour Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASAN), have called off their strike with immediate effect.

The unions had shut offices of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, nationwide following the announcement of its unbundling by minister of state for petroleum, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu.

Kachikwu the Group Managing Director of NNPC, had explained that what the oil corporation did was “reorganization,” a restructuring that will see it split into five divisions.

He assured that he was going to meet the unions yesterday to forestall further action by the unions, which may lead to a more biting fuel scarcity across the country.

But the unions have now resolved to work with the NNPC as long as its workers were not affected in the unbundling.

Kachikwu’s Technical Assistant on New Media, Ogechi Nnodim, confirmed the development to this morning.

“Please be informed that the unions have shelved their strike,” she said.

“They took the decision after a long meeting with the Minister.

“The meeting ended just after 4:30am and had in attendance unions that had kicked against the unbundling.

“We believe that with this development, the queues will end.”

Meanwhile, below is a communication from the GECs of NUPENG and PENGASSAN on the development.

“The GECs of NUPENG and PENGASSAN had a marathon meeting with the GMD/Minister of Petroleum (State) and NNPC Top Mgt for several hours, ending this morning @ 4:30am on the on-going industrial action. After exhaustive deliberations, a resolution was signed by the two parties. In view of that, the INDUSTRIAL ACTION is hereby suspended.
The GEC salutes your SOLIDARITY, UNDERSTANDING & COOPERATION.
NUPENGASSAN”.

“Details of the communique signed at the end of the meeting will be provided in due course.

“On behalf of the BECs of the two in-house unions, I thank you all for the cooperation and support extended to us during the struggle.”

They didn't inform the workers before embarking & calling off, the executives of both unions got read the riot act & they quickly dash themselves brain sha...

Ibe Kachikwu is an erudite lawyer with many years of ecperience in both national & international oil & gas, the process was well though out & he saw through their act..

He will weed out ineptitude, inefficiency & sabotage out of the NNPC, God willing..

He did & the workers are not apprehensive as they have been assured of no job loss , they were not even informed, most got the news from the media ... it's just that the union executives don't want a deviation from the status quo, one of their angst is that this will scatter a lot of things for them, E.G, a situation whereby they are lord supremo, now that the corporation has been restructured , each venture will be independent which means, someone from Gas can't be a union leader in downstream.. You get ?

Bros, you don't have to believe me or even give this a thought but you can confirm from folks in the know...
