5 Things You Need To Do Before You Think Of Studying Abroad by Tisg(m): 8:30am On Mar 10, 2016
Let me first start by saying we already have great schools in Nigeria even though i would like to pretend I'm unaware of the fact that the number one ranked University in Nigeria is currently ranked 601st in the world(At least there is a 1st), that's a beautiful 200 steps lower than Makerere University in Uganda, and University of Cape Town, a school in South Africa is 481 steps higher than University of Ibadan.

Do you feel like crying yet? Don't! I wont drive the bitter statistics further, that's not the essence of this post. This post is for those that wish to study in a country where the A's isn't for the lecturers and their families and a place where your soul wont dissolve because you have to sit in a class room that seem like you and the rest of your mates have been packaged in a massive tin of sardine being hawked on third mainland bridge under the watchful gaze of an angry sun.

I should however state now that if your sole aim of going abroad is to get an accent, (believe me there are people like that), you should know that accents gotten from schools in Ghana, Kenya, Benin Rep. do not count. Now that it's official, lets get down to the nitty gritty.

1. TALK TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE STUDIED/STUDYING ABROAD

The only thing harder than studying abroad is thinking about studying abroad, because you are as confused as a 3 year old toddler who just landed on the moon. WHY? There are over 23,729 universities all over the world and finding one that suits your taste is like an astronaut looking for an alien life in outer space. The good news is if you look around you, you would see friends on social media or extended family members who are already living the dream life. You can talk to this people and ask them the questions you want to, believe me its a better alternative than searching the internet all day looking for information only to end up on a porn site after hours of frustration and confusion. This friends can give you all the information you require, allay your fears and even offer to support you.

2. MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORT IS UP TO DATE

The next thing you need to do is to check if your passport is up to date. If you don't have a passport you should apply for one. You should note that it can take from 1 day to anywhere more than 8 years before you can get your passport, depending on the amount of ass you are willing to kiss with your money of course.

3. MAKE YOUR DECISIONS

This is where your life can totally go from absolute tranquility to 'Weed smoking, Codeine drinking' madness. At this stage, you can make all the wrong decisions or make all the right ones(not like there is any other choice). You have to choose the school you want to study in, your choice country, your career path, whether or not you should apply for a scholarship, the kind of accent you would get, etc. This is important because every school have their basic requirements, every country their economic, racist, natural issues, and every accent has its own perks. In other words, no country would be able to give you a 100 percent satisfaction. However you and i can both agree that any school is better than a school where they treat their students like shit, so the simple thing to do is look for that shit and avoid it.

4. DO YOUR RESEARCH

After you finally decide on the school you want to attend or the courses you would like to pursue, it is just logical to research on those schools. However I've met students who know next to nothing about their school(give them kudos for knowing the name though) or whether the school they want is offering the course they are going for. It is very simple, go to google, google is that massive site with a tiny box where you can type whatever you want and it would try to give you answers plus pizza and sharwama(now ladies please don't google google) When you get to google, just type in the name of your school and capish, you are a genius, just keep going. Also it is safe to have more than one school you wish to study, don't ask me why, i just know.

5. FIND A CONSULTING ORGANIZATION

Are you among the class of people who act like they know it all or think you can do it yourself? Well going abroad to study is a scenario where you would fail in grand style. You need help and you need the help of experts in the field. This people are specialized in ensuring that you achieve your goals, train you for exams, help you process admissions, choose the best schools for you, give you information on scholarships you don't even believe exists and well, do everything for you apart from cleaning your diapers if you still use one. A very good and reliable organization is http://www.mackivconsult.org/ aka EXAMPLANET SERVICES. You can visit their site for more information. There are others but that's the only one i choose to recommend. I hope you have no beef with that.

Make sure you have a job to return to. Studying abroad is no longer a guarantee for a job.

There are other things you'll gain if you study abroad and most people just want to have that experience!
