Healthcare providers have made significant progress in preventing the spread of hospital acquired infections also known as nosocomial infections. Yet, it is almost impossible to avoid contact with infected person and contaminated objects or instruments while on admission. In most cases, hospital acquired infections are not present in patients at the time of admission but are contracted through direct or indirect contact with other patients or hospital staff and contaminated objects or instruments during their stay in the hospital. This post was written to highlight some microorganisms infections that can be transmitted in hospitals via air, vectors (insects for example), and contact with infected people and contaminated objects. 7 Common Healthcare Associated Infections: 1. Sepsis -- also called blood poisoning is a life threatening infection mostly caused by bacteria, but can also be by fungi and viruses. 2. Bloodstream Infections -- is a serious medical condition caused by the presence of microorganisms called germs and some other infectious agents in the blood. 3. Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) -- this infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract (which is composed of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra). 4. Surgical Site Infection -- commonly called post - operative infection occurs at the part of the body where the surgery took place (within few days after the operation) and it's mostly caused by microorganisms like bacteria.
