This is most likely an allergic reaction to chloramphenicol or even penicillin.

I have seen a man in his late forties reacting to Chloramphenicol and the symptoms are very similar to this lady's own.

We have also lost a lady in our office to penicillin injection. She was even a nurse.!

Wasn't the eyedrop per se. It's hypersensitivity to perhaps a compound in the eyedrop that might be found in just about any random pharmaceutical base. I think there was a story on nairaland awhile ago about a Nigerian professional in Kenya who had the same condition. His began after taking anti-malarials I think.

pray dis soesnt happen to u my dear.if it didnt happen ro someone close to me too mayb i wld doubt just like u.though dis person didnt shed skin like she did nbut he lost d eye cos it had to be removed.he just hd itches on d eye and thinking it cld be conjuctivitis,he went to d pharmacy and bought eye drop.d second day d eye got worst,pus started coming out,swollen and itching.he thought maybe ot was d appollo setting so he didnt bother going to d clinic,after abt 3days wen d pain didnt go and it was spreading to d oda eye he was forced to visit a doc,d doctor was not an optician so he just hv him sm pain reliever and anoda eye drop.2days lata my hubby forced him to c an optician and after series of test ot was discovered dt d drop was too strong for his eye hence damaging tissues in his eyes and since it wasnt discovered early enuff it has damaged the eye completely and had to be removed to avoid it spreading to oda part of d eye.right now dis close friend is left with a eye becos of d eye drop...so u c,it can happen to anyone

Hmm...rare disease. ...allergic to eyedrops? All eyedrops are not the same...what really did she drop into her eyes? I would more believe the cause is not the eyedrops but whatever virus or bacteria caused the itching in the first place ...got into her bloodstream and been attacking and destroying her skin.

yes such thing can happen, I know of someone that died of Stephen Johnson syndrome. Artesunate causes Stephen Johnson on some patients

I read about one handsome banker who used a body cream and this happened to him too. I think he sued the company or so.

This is Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) aka Lyell syndrome , the rarer, deadlier extreme manifestation of Stevens-Johnson's syndrome (SJS). She's lucky she's treated in London, otherwise sepsis would've done her for were she treated in a Nigerian public hospital. I pray she pulls through.

They can't sue the company because it was not a counterfeit drug. If anything at all it's physician who should be asked (not queried) if he had any way of knowing that this could happen to her.
This condition exist but is rare, the patient and even the doctors have no real way of knowing for sure.
The active ingredient in that drug is what susceptible people are allergic to.

Thank God she pulled through.
