Published on May 19, 2022 By Seun Opejobi Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, has cautioned the North against thinking it would produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023. Igbokwe said the North should perish the thought of a Northerner succeeding Buhari in 2023. The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Drainage and Water Resources said the clamour for a Northerner to succeed Buhari in 2023 is “a joke”. In a Facebook post, Igbokwe wrote: “Someone just called me to say that the North is thinking about producing the presidency again in 2023. I laughed until tears started coming out of my eyes. Perish the thought and consider it a joke.” President Buhari is from the North, while the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, is also from the North. But there is now a counter-clamour to throw the ticket open to all the six geo-political zones of Nigeria, which seems to be gaining the upper hand. Published on May 17, 2022 By Nsikak Nseyen President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has dismissed claims that he is running for the presidency. Recall that a coalition of 28 groups had purchased and submitted the nomination form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on behalf of Adesina. But reacting, Adesina in a statement issued on Tuesday, maintained that he is not running for president. “I am very touched by all who have gone to a great extent, with such huge sacrifices, of their own volition, to consider me worthy to be proposed for potential consideration. “The coalition groups of youth, women, farmers, physically challenged and well-meaning Nigerians that have done this have expressed their genuine free will, political right, freedom of expression and association for my consideration, with the interest of Nigeria at heart. “While I am deeply honoured, humbled and grateful for all the incredible goodwill, kindness, and confidence, my current responsibilities at this time do not allow me to accept to be considered. “I remain fully engaged and committed to the mission that Nigeria, Africa and all the non-African shareholders of the African Development Bank have given me for Africa’s development,” he read. Published on May 16, 2022 By John Owen Nwachukwu Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Monday, tasked the Department of State Services to arrest the Chief Imam of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Sheikh Abubakar Jibril, for allegedly inciting Muslims against the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah. HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said Jibril was captured in a video that has gone viral allegedly telling his many Muslim followers to get the home address of Kukah and possibly attack the bishop if he is the person that sent Deborah Samuel Emmanuel Yakubu to the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto where she allegedly blasphemed against the prophet of Islam. Rampaging hoodlums on Saturday vandalised at least two parishes presided over by Bishop Kukah and it took the swift response of security operatives to stop any attack on Kukah’s personal residence. Rioters had on Thursday stoned and burnt a 200-level Home Economics student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Deborah Yakubu, for alleged blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The police arrested two suspects but protesters demanded their release. The young demonstrators turned violent, vandalised, looted and burnt traders’ shops, churches and residential apartments perceived to be owned by Christians. HURIWA accused security agencies as well as 18 of the 19 governors in the whole of northern Nigeria of supporting the brutal killing of blasphemers and for grooming Islamic extremists through the implementation of policies skewed in favour of Moslems to the neglect of many other citizens of other faiths and belief systems in those states. The group cited Section 10 of the 1999 constitution as saying the government of the federation or of a state shall not adopt any religion as the state religion. HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “By this statement, HURIWA is putting the Department of State Services on notice to hold Sheikh Abubakar Jibril accountable for the fatal mob attack on Kukah’s parishes on Saturday. “In fact we think the constant bashing of spokespersons of President Muhammadu Buhari against Bishop Kukah each time the Cleric issues critiques of some anti people’s and anti democracy thereby encouraging haters of truth and objectivity to target Right Reverend Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto for attacks by such Islamic fanatics as has just happened with the recorded video by the Sokoto Islamic preacher who openly incited his followers against Bishop Kukah. “Jibril, in a trending video, erroneously accused Bishop Kukah of motivating Deborah to commit alleged blasphemy and that he should stop or else he will be dealt with. The inflammatory cleric (Jibril) then asked if they know his (Kukah’s) house and the listeners shouted, ‘Yes we do’. He is inciting them to attack Bishop Kukah. “HURIWA charges the DSS to arrest Jibril immediately for questioning as the secret police had probed and persecuted the late deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia; and other vocal Christian leaders like Kukah himself. “Anything short of the arrest of Jibril is sentimental and condemnable. Nothing must happen to Kukah. Nigerians are watching and are not fools. “HURIWA again enjoins all Nigerians of conscience to come out enmasse as announced by the Christian Association of Nigeria and protest the killing of Deborah to pressure the Muhammadu Buhari led government to serve justice on the matter and for her killers to be punished according to extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Via: https://dailypost.ng/2022/05/16/deborah-samuel-dss-told-to-arrest-sheikh-abubakar-jibril-immediately-over-bishop-kukah/ |

BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKMAY 11, 2022 The Court of Appeal has set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court in Umuahia on the deletion of section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022. In a judgment on Wednesday in Abuja, a three-member panel of the court headed by Justice Hamma Akawu Barka declared the section as unconstitutional because it violates Section 42 (1)(a) of the Constitution and denied a class of Nigerian citizens their right to participate in an election. SaharaReporters Media The appeal also held that the court in Umuahia had no jurisdiction to have entertained the case because the plaintiff, Nduka Edede, lacked the locus standi to have filed the suit in the first place. The judgment was on the appeal marked: CA/OW/87/2022 filed by the Peoples Democratic Party. The Court of Appeal subsequently struck out the suit marked: FHC/UM/CS/26/2022 which Edede filed before the Federal High Court. President Muhammadu Buhari had assented to the Electoral Act Amendment bill on February 25. He had, however, asked the national assembly to delete section 84(12) of the act, which reads: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.” According to the president, the provision “disenfranchises” political appointees. On March 18, a Federal High Court in Umuahia ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to immediately delete the aforementioned section on the grounds that it violates the provisions of the constitution. Delivering the ruling in a suit marked FHC/UM/CS/26/2022, Anyadike said sections 66(1)(f), 107(1)(f), 137(1)(f) and 182(1)(f) of the 1999 constitution already stipulated that government appointees seeking to contest elections were only to resign at least 30 days to the date of the election. Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, on Sunday visited the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, in Cotonou, Benin Republic. Soyinka also held a closed-door meeting with the Yoruba Nation Leader and the coordinator of the Ilana Omo Oodua group, Prof Banji Akintoye, as well as his deputy, Prof Wale Adeniran, in the city. Igboho, who was arrested in the West African country in mid-2021 had spent more than five months in custody before he was freed to leave the cell but not the country. Soyinka said he had always wanted to see Igboho, to "sympathise with his predicament". The Nobel laureate, who was seen at the Seme border around 12pm on Sunday, was observed crossing to Cotonou, the commercial capital of Benin Republic. His response was that he was on a visit to the Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho to "break the Muslim fast with him." Reminded that neither he nor Ighoho was a Muslim, he asserted that it made no difference. He said he had wished to see Igboho, so as to sympathise with his predicament. Ramadan is as good as any other season to express non-denominational solidarity, added Soyinka. MAY 1, 2022 President Muhammadu Buhari has said the military operations in the South-East region have started yielding results and have led to the arrest of a large number of suspects. Buhari on Sunday noted that the “disturbing rise in criminal attacks targeting law enforcement and public facilities in the South-East, concerted military operations” are on to “rid the region of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) elements.” The President also spoke while sending his best wishes to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world celebrating the occasion of the Holy month of Ramadan that ended. Buhari, who said “The fight has been long and hard. Final victory is within sight. Boko Haram and its offshoots’ final embers are now fading,” adding that “After a period of fasting and reflection, this year, we have cause to welcome the occasion in hope.” The President, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, further directed increased coordination and cooperation among security agencies. Buhari assured there would be no shortage of funds to provide security for the citizens. The President, who appraised the security situation across the country, said: “Last month, the leader of ISWAP was killed in an airstrike. Since the New Year, thousands of fighters have surrendered to enter rehabilitation programmes. The territories they used to occupy are now seeing the return of those who were forced to flee their barbarity. Normality is finally beginning to return to the Northeast. It is a long process. Yet it is one we are, together, now embarking upon. “With the designation of bandit groups as terrorists, the challenges of banditry and kidnapping are being tackled differently in the North-western and North Central states where the latest military acquisitions and the Armed Forces are being fanned out across the region to thwart acts of terror. “The administration is equally getting impressive reports of the special operations to curb crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering in the South-South, with millions of illegally refined products being impounded and illegal refineries destroyed. “While we are making progress cleaning the environment, some evil people are busy causing more pollution and destruction. In response to the disturbing rise in criminal attacks targeting law enforcement and public facilities in the South-East, concerted military operations to rid the region of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) elements have, in recent weeks, led to the overrunning of IPOB/ESN bases, the seizure of weapons and the arrest of a large number of suspects.” Via: http://saharareporters.com/2022/05/01/military-operations-stop-ipob-esn-attacks-south-east-will-be-sustained-%E2%80%93buhari |
